„What is do be done?“ ist ein Projekt des MFA-Programmes „Public Art and New Artistic Strategies“ der Bauhaus-Universität Weimar unter Leitung von Professorin Danica Dakic und den Künstlerischen Mitarbeiterinnen Anke Hannemann and Lisa Glauer
Das Projekt WHAT IS TO BE DONE? befasst sich mit den Fragen von Erinnerung und Gedenken mittels künstlerischer Auseinandersetzung.
Nach einer intensiven Recherche im Stadtarchiv und an Plätzen im öffentlichen Raum sind die Ausgangspunkte für temporäre Installationen, Aktionen, Performances und Interventionen die Erinnerungsorte Weimars. Wie können sogenannte “lieux de memoire” – Erinnerungsorte – Erinnerungen hervorbringen, öffentliche und private? Wie ist die Vergangenheit sichtbar und/oder unsichtbar heutzutage? Im Mittelpunkt des Interesses lagen künstlerische Methoden, die es möglich gemacht haben, den Prozess von Erinnerung und Vergessen zu erfahren. Wie ist die Herangehensweise an Geschichte verflochten mit unserer eigenen individuellen Biografie und kulturellen Identität? Temporäre, vergängliche Interventionen haben das Potential für individuelle Reflektion über persönliche und soziale Träume.

WARM UP – Antrittsvorlesung von Professorin Danica Dakic, neue Leiterin des MFA-Programmes
Zum Antritt ihrer Professur an der Fakultät Gestaltung gibt Danica Dakic am 26. Oktober um 17 Uhr im Audimax der Universitätsbibliothek Einblick in ihre künstlerische Arbeit und erläutert ihre Vorstellungen von der Lehre im Bereich "Kunst im öffentlichen Raum und neue künstlerische Strategien".

Die Befragung von Konzepten wie Identität, Heimat und Geschichte, von Sprache und Kultur, nicht zuletzt unter den Bedingungen von Krieg oder Migration, ist ein zentrales Motiv von Arbeiten im videografischen, filmischen und fotografischen Medium sowie in Projekten im öffentlichen Raum.
In diesem Kontext geht es immer auch um die soziale und kulturelle Prägung von Rollen, deren Aneignung und Artikulationsformen. Bezogen auf den Schwerpunkt »Kunst und Gedenken« skizziert die Vorlesung Koordinaten für die künstlerische Suche nach Formen der Erinnerung, die Herrschaftsstrukturen und Ideologien befragt und dekonstruiert, statt sie zu affirmieren.
Danica Dakic studierte an den Kunstakademien in Sarajevo, Belgrad und Düsseldorf. Ihre Arbeiten wurden in zahlreichen internationalen Ausstellungen gezeigt, darunter Istanbul Biennale 2003 und 2009, documenta 12, 2007, Sydney Biennale 2010 und Liverpool Biennale 2010. Die Einzelausstellungen umfassen u.a. Kunsthalle Düsseldorf, 2009, Generali Foundation, Wien, 2010, Museum für zeitgenössische Kunst, Zagreb, 2010 und Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, 2011. Als Gastprofessorin im WS 2009/10 im MFA-Programm „Public Art and New Artistic Strategies“ konnte sie ihre Vorstellung von disziplinenübergreifender künstlerischer Arbeit mit Studierenden im Projekt "Citymap" bereits verwirklichen.

Mitte September kommen an der Bauhaus-Universität Weimar hochrangige Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler sowie Künstlerinnen und Künstler zusammen, um gemeinsam über Projekte und Kooperationsmöglichkeiten auf den Gebieten der Forschung, Kunst, Technologien, Performance und Medien zu sprechen. Ziel des Workshops ist es, die langfristige Zusammenarbeit zwischen der Bauhaus-Universität Weimar und der University of California, San Diego, (UCSD) um die Bereiche Kunst, Design, Medien und Architektur zu erweitern.
Bereits seit 2007 organisieren Wissenschaftler der Weimarer Universität und der Universität in San Diego gemeinsam die Workshopreihe „Technology and Society“ („Technologie und Gesellschaft“). Deutsche und amerikanische Ingenieure und Informatiker tauschten sich infolge regelmäßig über neueste Entwicklungen in ihrer Forschung aus, etwa auf dem Gebiet der Simulationstechnologien. In diesem Jahr haben die Veranstalter den Teilnehmerkreis erstmals thematisch neuorientiert und Architekten, Künstler, Medienwissenschaftler und Kunsttheoretiker gebeten, ihre Projekte und Forschungsbereiche vorzustellen.
So sieht das Tagungsprogramm Vorträge zu Themen wie Design-Philosophie, interaktivem Design, Experimentalbauten auf dem Weimarer Campus und der zukünftigen gesellschaftlichen Rolle der Ingenieure vor. Der Dekan der Jacobs School of Engineering, Prof. Frieder Seible, wird das neue hochmoderne Gebäude „Bauhaus West“ präsentieren, das demnächst auf dem Campus in San Diego entsteht und modernste Visualisierungstechnologien bereithält.
Aus Kalifornien reisen Vertreter der künstlerischen Departments der UCSD an, beispielsweise der Direktor des Center of Design and Geopolitics, Prof. Benjamin H. Bratton, und Sound Designer Shahrokh Yadegari vom Department of Theater and Dance. Aus der Bauhaus-Universität Weimar werden unter anderem Prof. Bernd Rudolf, Dekan der Fakultät Architektur, sowie Prof. Jens Geelhaar und Prof. Ursula Damm, beide aus dem Bereich Medienkunst/Mediengestaltung, Vorträge halten. Auch Mitarbeiter, Studierende und Alumni aus der Bauhaus-Universität Weimar werden über ihre aktuellen Projekte referieren.
Neben dem eigentlichen Workshop-Programm haben die internationalen Wissenschaftler und Künstler zudem bei einer Labor-Tour die Gelegenheit, die Bauhaus-Universität Weimar zu besichtigen und in einem Bauhaus-Spaziergang mehr über ihre berühmte Geschichte zu erfahren. Eine Kreativtour führt die Teilnehmer am zweiten Workshop-Tag in die Kreativ-Schmiede der Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, die Existenzgründerwerkstatt „neudeli“.

The project WHAT IS TO BE DONE? deals with questions of remembering and commemoration in the medium of art.
After intensive research in the city archive and on location in the public space, the starting point for temporary installations, actions, performances and interventions are memory places in Weimar. How do so-called “lieux de memoire” – memory spaces – make memory, public and private? How is the past visible and/or invisible today? At the center of this interest lie artistic practices that make it possible to experience the process of remembering and forgetting. How is the perception of history intertwined with our own individual biographic and cultural identity? Temporary, fleeting interventions contain the potential for individual reflection about personal and social dreams.

WARM UP – Inaugural lecture by the new head of the MFA-program Professor Danica Dakic
Danica Dakic will start off her professorship at the Faculty of Art and Design by providing insight into her artistic work and describing her vision in terms of teaching in the field of "Public Art and New Artistic Strategies". Her inaugural lecture will take place at 5 p.m. on October 26, 2011 in the audimax of the University Library.
Questioning concepts such as identity, home and history, language and culture, not last subject to conditions of war, of migration, is a central motif of the video, filmic and photographic work as well as her work in the public realm. This always involves the social and cultural shaping of roles, their acquisition and articulation.
In relation to the main focus "art and commemoration", the lecture sketches several coordinates for artistic research into forms of commemoration, questioning and deconstructing power structures and ideologies, rather than affirming them.
Danica Dakic studied at art academies in Sarajevo, Belgrade and Düsseldorf. Her works were exhibited in numerous international exhibitions, among other: the Istanbul Biennial 2003 and 2009, documenta 12, 2007, the Sydney Biennial 2010 and the Liverpool Biennial 2010. Solo shows are comprised of, among others, Kunsthalle Düsseldorf, 2009, Generali Foundation, Vienna, 2010, Museum for Contemporary Art, Zagreb, 2010 and Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, 2011. As guest professor during the Winter Semester of 2009/10 at the MFA-Program „Public Art and New Artistic Strategies“, she first implemented her vision of transdisciplinary art work with students within the framework of the project "Citymap".

«Über den Dilettantismus» lautet die programmatische Klammer des 17. Internationalen Atelierprogramms von ACC und Stadt Weimar, für das sich 149 Künstler aus 42 Ländern bewarben. Nach der Australierin Kel Glaister und vor dem Briten Adam Knight ist derzeit Stipendiatin Jeanette Chavez Ruiz, geboren 1980 im kubanischen Havanna, zu Gast in Weimar. Ihre Performances, Installationen, Videos und Fotografien dokumentieren eine obsessive Sehnsucht nach Veränderung in einer Realität, die von konstanter Ablehnung gesättigt ist. Sie enthüllen die Visionen einer Gesellschaft, die ge- und verformt sind durch Misstrauen, Zensur, Ego, Unterordnung. Die Beziehungen zwischen individuellem und sozialem oder politischem Körper untersucht Jeanette Chavez Ruiz auch in ihrer neuesten Produktion: einem Tanz-Benutzerhandbuch für Infanteristen, mit dem sie Soldaten in speziellen Uniformen tanzen lassen wird. Der Abend ist gespickt mit Filmbeispielen aus Jeanettes Œuvre. Vortrag in spanischer Sprache mit Simultanübersetzung.

You are welcome to join us for a small documentation release party on Monday, January 17 at M18. The publications document two projects with students from the MFA Public Art and New Artistic Strategies that took place in collaboration with Betonaslon in Paris and arttransponder e.V. Berlin in 2010, respectively.
The layout for both publications was done by VK alumni and current MFA student Johannes Abendroth.
SWIMMING BACKWARDS
13 students from the Master-of-Fine-Arts Program "Public Art and New Artistic Strategies“ of the Bauhaus-University Weimar in Germany present the outcome of their working process in the area of the 13th district which is currently undergoing reconstruction and gentrification. Invited by the Betonsalon to research and react on the neighbourhood surrounding the artspace, students from Colombia, China, Germany, Greece, Holland, Ireland, Mexico, Israel, Austria, Taiwan and the United States explored this newly constructed part of the city for 10 days. Through a series of temporary interventions the students met with inhabitants, investigated aspects of public health and interacted with their surroundings. Their works reflect upon the urban developments in this area of the city, on a multiplicity of viewpoints and changing macro and ! microscopic perspectives.
The project was initiated by Nadin Reschke from the MFA Public Art and New Artistic Strategies and Constanze Fritsch from the Department of History of Art at Bauhaus-University Weimar.
PUSHING THE ELASTIC CUBE - mobile by circumstance
13 artists “in transit” from Canada, the USA, Greece, Chile, Mexico, P.R. China and Germany from the postgraduate program Public Art and New Artistic Strategies at the Bauhaus-University Weimar presented work based on the idea of memory and the dissolution of the White Cube.
arttransponder is an artists association that ran a project space for five years on the heavily gentrified Brunnenstraße and is currently facing the space’s closing in June. In both a literal and a metaphorical sense, arttransponder, which has focused on participatory projects at the interface to other disciplines.
This project was developed in relation to the question of how an art space might continue after it is (re)moved from its precarious position within existing architectural structures in a rapidly transforming urban environment.
The short term project and exhibition "Pushing the Elastic Cube - mobile by circumstance" was initiated by Lisa Glauer from the MFA. It was sponsored by the non for profit space arttransponder, Berlin.
