Anyone who wore knitwear in the GDR very likely had a piece of Apolda on them. The flourishing textile industry nourished and shaped the town for many decades and even centuries. While 35 years ago Apolda and the surrounding area was still littered with smaller and larger textile companies, today the number of knitting factories can be counted on one hand. A piece of cultural history and an important economic driver of a town is dying along with the knowledge of industrial knitting production.
In collaboration with the knitting company Anke Hammer StrickArt in Bad Sulza, six large-format knitting banners were produced. These refer to the cultural heritage of the town of Apolda and the current production and working conditions in the textile industry. After the exhibition at the Van-de-Velde-Bau during summaery, the pieces moved to Apolda, where they were displayed on the railroad station building.
This project is a call to knit along, to participate. Let’s knit for visibility!
