Johannes Breuer: Digital Pain Assessment, 2023
Type: Research Project Degree Programme: Design (Ph.D.) Professorship: Theory and History of Design, Industrial Design Advisors: Prof. Dr. Jan Willmann, Prof. Andreas Mühlenberend

How severe is your pain from 1–10? Many patients find describing their pain challenging. The project explores the potential of a visual pain assessment through the interactive modulation of digital graphics.

With the participation of patients of the Universitätsklinikum Jena, an interactive demonstrator was developed in which pain can be visualized by different ‘tools’. With these, patients can generate a personal representation of their pain experience. In result, pain is a) presented in more detail and b) becomes easier to articulate. This leads to an improvement in the treatment situation for both patients and physicians.
