During their studies, design students produce a wide range of output. Some designs have the potential to be developed into marketable products or industrial series. Pop-up shops are a proven sales concept, especially in the young creative scene. Since the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar did not have a platform for its students to test the actual distribution of their designs, the professorships of Image-Text-Conception and Design & Management joined forces in an interdisciplinary project to let students design and build the very first Bauhaus pop-up shop. With success: In February 2023, “NU – the Bauhaus Student Store” opened for three days at Markstraße 16 in Weimar. “NU” is a modular and flexible pop-up shop system specially designed for the presentation and sale of contemporary Bauhaus designs. The first edition offered a carefully selected range of products, including prints, ceramics, a vinyl record and metal shovels that customers could press themselves. The students established the shop as their own brand with a unique name (referring to ‘new’, ‘naked’ or ‘now’), a logo and a limited colour scheme. These elements were used for all communications associated with the shop, such as price tags, product catalogues, posters, social media content and giveaways. The store architecture is completely flexible and reusable. It consists of metal grids that can be transformed into tables, shelves, walls and stools, and is supplied with matching lamps. The first “NU” pop-up in the centre of Weimar was very well received, as evidenced by extensive press coverage, successful sales and hundreds of visitors.
