Photography: PERSPECTIVES, 2023
Type: Semester Project Degree Programme: Visual Communication Professorship: Photography Advisors: Prof. Dr. Birgit Wudtke, Pio Rahner, Anja Engelke

With the title PERSPECTIVES, the photography students of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar are showing their work in the urban space of Weimar, not far from the Schillerstraße university gallery. Under the direction of Prof. Birgit Wudtke, artistic assistant Pio Rahner and lecturer Anja Engelke, the students have explored the genre of portraiture and the image of the street. In the vacant store space, Tarek Rishmawi and three student teams are curating a spatial concept with prints and objects for Summaery 2023. Thematically, the department focuses primarily on democratization processes, which are set in motion by the lively discourse with and among the students on the one hand – but are also made possible by the medium itself and even intensified with regard to digitalization. Who am I, individually and in society? Who and what determines my perspective and how can I expand it in the discourse and in dealing with photography? Who is looking at whom or what and how is it being looked at? Photography offers the opportunity to question, rethink and shift one's own point of view. This can be the result of a (mutual) mirroring that can be accomplished with the help of photography. The street is a public space where people with different stories come together, look at each other and let their gaze wander. The preoccupation with the street as a socio-cultural space, as a system of order and as a building is illuminated in excerpts. The depiction of the surroundings is shaped by the individual perspective, but also by the design, the color, the contrasts, the detail, the composition of lines and surfaces – as a result of the medium and the material.
