Carlotta Wegener: TALAR, 2024
Type: Independent Project Degree Programme: Visual Communication Professorship: Photography Advisors: Prof. Dr. Birgit Wudtke

Student Carlotta Wegener, Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, has photographed professors at Friedrich Schiller University Jena wearing the TALAR. Wegener’s photographs focus on the relationship between tradition and modernity, the communicative function of clothing and aspects of everyday university life. Carlotta Wegener’s work moves between the genres of portrait, artistic documentary and fashion photography. In addition to her large-format portraits, the exhibition will also feature interviews with the people portrayed, which were conducted by students at Jena University. In these, personal thoughts and positions on the ritual of wearing a TALAR can be read. The public can also give their opinion on the subject. The exhibition was conceived and realized as part of a two-semester practical module offered at the Department of Cultural History and in cooperation with the Custody (art collection) of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena. The photo exhibition was supported by the Thuringian University and State Library and the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar and sponsored by the Friedrich Schiller University Jena and its Society of Friends and Sponsors.
