SpaceX, Hyperloop, Metaverse – concepts that promise a better future and fuel hope that a technical solution can be found for every problem. This technology optimism is also evident with regard to climate change. However, uncritical confidence in technologies harbors the risk that other crucial climate protection measures are neglected. To draw attention to this problem, Master student Simon Geistlinger created six absurd inventions under the title “Uns wird schon etwas einfallen” (Eng.: “We’ll think of something”) that seemingly eliminate the causes and consequences of the climate crisis in no time at all. How about a butt plug for cows to capture methane, for example? Or a drinking water vending machine that offers melting polar ice caps? The proposals satirically challenge the hopes of technology optimists. The realization: we will probably not be able to confront climate change entirely without restrictions. All of the objects in the work were on display in a multimedia exhibition in Weimar in October.
The project was awarded two Golden Nails and an Honorable Mention by ADC Germany in 2023.
