Bauhaus.Module Summer semester 2019

The course gives an introduction to the theory and history of design. It provides a basic overview of central creative, social and cultural positions from the Second World War to the digital present. The students develop competences in order to be able to view approaches and methods critically and transport them into the present. The course requires a pre-registration with the use of the uni-e-mail address to wl[at]gestaltung.uni-weimar.de.

The seminar serves as an introduction to Gilles Deleuze's philosophy. It focuses on Deleuze’s third creative period, which extends from the end of the 1970s to his death in 1995 and thus includes his two volumes on cinema. A central question is how people can free themselves from regimes of opinion which influence the thinking of the individual.

Bertolt Brecht's works, regardless of which medium they use, whether theatre production, ballad, radio piece, film, poem or theoretical essay, are thinking works that consciously want to allow the audience to participate in the development process and stimulate independent thinking. Brecht's philosophy is a philosophy of change. Nothing remains as it is. In this emphasis on a permanent becoming and Brecht's weakness for unstable subjectivities is a surprisingly close relationship to the thinking of Gilles Deleuze. Participation in the course "Against Opinion. Introduction to Gilles Deleuze's Philosophy" is recommended.

Human auditory perception is subjective. Certain sounds can be focussed or suppressed. However, the microphone has an "innocent view" of the acoustic environment. In self-experiments and exercises, with the microphone and the pen, the students will approach this innocent gaze. The course takes place in cooperation with the Lecturership of Film and Media Studies and in cooperation with the Thuringian model project "Mindful Universities in the Digital Society". Part of the course is a Mindfulness-Based Student Training (MBST) that trains mindfulness in an academic context (exam anxiety, time management, etc.). In the period between 7.6. and 15.6. there is also the possibility to take part in an excursion to the Bergcafe Reusten on the Swabian Alb.

The painter John Ruskin and the writer Peter Handke have a longing for the innocent description and staging of natural conditions. They develop a new view at the old world. The seminar examines this "innocent eye" in the arts of the media world. From 09. to 15.06. an excursion to the Bergcafé Reusten on the Swabian Alb takes place. For a final exhibition planned there, various modes of writing, recording and broadcasting are possible. Associated with the course is a mindfulness course, which starts on 09.04. every Tuesday from 15:00 to 16:45. The course is offered in cooperation with the Faculty of Art and Design and the University of Hildesheim.

The first event will take place on the 9th of April at 3:15 pm in Steubenstrasse 8, Limona, glass box on top of the roof.

The cultural scientist Aby Warburg used to organize his academic work in many specific ways, e.g. by establishing a co-written Working-Diary. Especially the Cultural Techniques which appeared in the milieu of the Kulturwissenschaftliche Bibliothek Warburg (K.B.W.) between 1926 and 1929 are worth to look at with a closer perspective of media-theory. The course will deal with a range of different Cultural Techniques of Organization and tries to evoke a perspective for other artefacts and fields of organization and their techniques referring to essential texts of Archival Studies and Media Cultural Technique Research.

According to Walter Benjamin, dwelling in bourgeois society arises out of habits. The correlation between habitat and habit is an intrinsic one that goes beyond the very culture and epoch Benjamin had in mind. Dwelling is a transitional area of physical and cultural techniques. Following this perspective, the course reading combines texts and case studies from the fields of anthropology and ethnology, architecture and design to dwells on the relation of mobility and immobility of dwelling as well as on the specific architectural elements and functions of dwelling.

The course deals with different facets of the management of digital transformation.The focus is on the particularly important areas of product and innovation development, on the conception of business models and on digital change management (technology, structures, processes, HR). In order to gain a conceptual understanding of these topics, central theoretical approaches of organization and management research will be presented, discussed and applied to practical cases. Furthermore, application-oriented management approaches are presented that are used in the practice of digital transformation. Prerequisite is a prior knowledge in the field of digitization or a pronounced interest in the implications of digitization for business and society.

The aim of the course is to investigate the conjunction between media studies and the history of science. Media is becoming more and more important for the dissemination and acquisition of knowledge, and at the same time the works of scientists are important pioneers in the everyday media. Which topics and resources will affect life in the future?

A prerequisite for liberal arts work is the development of theory-oriented perceptions and questions. The seminar introduces the practice of scientific work. Through writing and perception exercises and exercises with various readings, the students develop skills for the preparation of a research question, the development of a scientific paper and finally the writing process.
The seminar can be combined with the events: "Translating" by Michael Cuntz or with "At some point I decided that everything is strange and everything is new, and everything is undetected" - an excursion to the Swabian Alb, an exercise, an exhibition " - an interdisciplinary course with students of the art and design faculty and the University of Hildesheim.

The course will explore precarious forms of housing, i.e. cultures and places that do not allow for “dwelling” in terms of the “right of housing” as defined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The course examines "other places of living" and "places of other living": institutions such as prisons, nursing homes, homeless shelters, but also refugee camps.

The course examines conscious and unconscious action sequences based on various design processes that have contributed to the development or solution of a design problem. Important questions are: What are contemporary hybrid processes? How much space for intuition, spontaneity and coincidence allow design processes of current design practice? Which conscious and unconscious actions can be used profitably in future work?

Emigration always goes hand in hand with disruptions of family ties as well as with discontinuities of social, religious and cultural traditions. Left-behind books and manuscripts fall out of connection, and in exile the lost context can usually be restored only in fragments and under completely changed conditions. This seminar aims to trace the paths of lost and salvaged archival material, focusing on emigration in the 20^th and 21^st century up to the present day.

The periodical "Journal des Luxus und der Moden" (1786-1827) was both based on and enhancing a network of commerce and trade, of politics , of education and science, of literature and art. Following its editors, Friedrich Justus Bertuch and Georg Melchior Kraus, it was intended as a ‘chronicle of one of the most important stems of luxury and commodious sensualities in all its various modifications’ for the contemporary readers. The journal’s network was wide-spread: contributions were received from Paris, London, and Vienna. The research will take place in archives in and around Weimar and in two workshops at the Klassik Stiftung Weimar, in cooperation with students from Martin Luther University Halle and Friedrich Schiller University Jena.

In this seminar, we will discuss basic research texts on the media historiography of sciences, in connection with a historical and systematic 'reading' of archival objects, in which the history of media and knowledge is simultaneously addressed and performed.

Based on theories of hearing by Michel Serres and Michel Chion, the seminar will deal with various acoustic media.

The course focuses on the real and phantasmatic forms of living together and their reflection in the philosophical discourse around community. Different forms of living, from monasteries to shared flats, are examined as implementations of different ideas of living together. From the architecture of the Bauhaus to the violent excesses of the NS-Volksgemeinschaft, 'community' appears as a problem emblematic of the 20^th century in political history, philosophical thought and architectural discourse. As a counterpoint to the "people-oriented" architectural philosophies, the seminar brings together thinkers who redefine living together in a new architectural and philosophical perspective.

The aim of this course is not only to read and learn about comics but also to design a comic. As a starting point the students will take the academic guide for our Media Studies Department – written by students of the seminar “Writing” WS18/19 lead by Claudia Tittel - and try to transform it into an info-comic step by step in the course of the semester.
Drawing skills are welcome but not necessarily required to participate at the course.

From the ubiquity of smart phones, the internet of things to Eurorack synthesizers: Linux running on miniature computers is playing an ever extending role and is present in every day life as well as in obscure special interest scenes.In the class "Autonomous - Collaborative" we design conceptual and applied interactions with microphones and speakers. The units based on a RaspberryPi can interact and communicate with itself, with other units or a human user.While working on individual projects experience and knowledge in the fields of electronics, Linux, Pure Data and concepts of sound synthesis, interaction as well as machine learning and software agents will be gathered.

„Bauhaus Orbits” is a interdisciplinary free project and an academic experiment to realise in a 1:1 scale an exhibition installation. The content of the exhibition is an algorithmic discourse analysis of the historical Bauhaus books to present it with an interactive 360° beamer projection. The project is funded by the Freundeskreis der Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, the Ministry of Economy, Science and Digital Society and the Kreativfonds of Bauhaus-Universität Weimar.

For the project we need interested students to construct the architectural part of the exhibition and to install the technical set up in April and Mai.

The Bauhaus Digital Masterclass brings international and national scholars to Weimar for a one-day block-seminar and an accompanying evening lecture. The one day class encompasses 3-4 sessions a 90 minutes, the lecture will be ca. 30-40 minutes plus time for discussion. The lecture will be on the evening before the day of class and open to the Bauhaus public.

Die Bauhaus Digital Masterclass bringt seit dem Wintersemester 2018/19 zwei bis dreimal pro Semester renommierte nationale und internationale Forscher und Lehrende für ein eintägiges Blockseminar an die Bauhaus Universität Weimar. Das Thema der Bauhaus Digital Masterclass im Sommersemester 2019 ist der digitale Körper. Dabei geht es um Fragen wie Körper digitalisiert werden, darum wie die Digitalisierung den Körper und seine Wahrnehmung verändert und wie Körper die Digitalisierung verändern.
Das Grundlagenkolloquium Digitalisierung ist ein zweiwöchentliches Kolloquium zu Vor- und Nachbereitung der Masterclass. In diesem Rahmen werden Texte und Projekte zu den Seminaren gelesen und diskutiert. The term eHealth describes the digitization of bodies and healthcare. This seminar approaches eHealth both in a historical as well as in a contemporary perspective and investigates the main topics and problems of the encounter between digital media, bodies and organized healthcare. Media like wearables, smartphone and environmental sensors and the status of the data generated by them will be explored as well as the construction of health and sickness under these conditions.

Media shape our environment, determine our day and night rhythms, they configure and enable communication and inform our actions and thinking consciously and unconsciously. In short: media belong to "our" existence and in some cases are seamlessly integrated into it. What this means for "our self-image as people" is an open question that leads to media anthropology. While the traditional anthropologies of the humanities have searched for essentialist determinations of man and have attempted to make determinations that are valid over time, which led not least to problematic demarcations of the category "human" from those of the "non-human" and to the distinction of a special position of man in the cosmos, a media anthropology searches for other ways of description and reflection. The lecture is dedicated to the program of a systematic media anthropology to be built up and its historically heterogeneous voices as well as the methodological and content-related challenges of such a media anthropology.

In teaching and reflecting the history of media, we have to take into account that media are always already involved in their own history. In other words: Media and media techniques provide the conditions of their own historiography. In the present case, the performance of media history draws back on the specific format of the lecture, an institution which Nietzsche described metaphorically as the engine of the "educational machinery of the university". In the sense of the preliminary remark made above, the lecture has the goal of keeping this educational machinery running while, at the same time, thinking about the preconditions for its functioning (and about the alternatives that were developed, for example, at the Bauhaus). Hence, the lecture series will be about the history of media as well as the conditions/methods of their historiography.

The search for artistic identity and the reactions to the individual cognitive processes dominate the educational processes in art and design. The course focuses on the routines and rituals of the everyday and the changes since the beginning of modern times. 12 students and 18 artists gave an interview about their personal artistic careers. During the "Denkraum Bauhaus", these results should be presented artistically and dialogically. In addition, the performance "Looking Away" (Jorge-Semprun-Platz, Weimar, Summer 2018) is being revised in order to think about the importance of art for social changes.

A Think Tank is a creative project group that develops innovative concepts for business, industry or administration, for this course especially on next generation mobility. The aim of the course is the development of a business plan for the Think Tank and its execution afterwards. Students will learn how to develop a business idea, how to create a business plan and understand marketing theories and applications.

On the 100th anniversary of the Bauhaus and the Weimar Republic, democracy is to be reinterpreted. In a democratic national contest from 10/02 until 15/04 the citizens of Weimar can suggest new space and facade designs as well as new concepts of use of Theaterplatz, the pulsating heart of Weimar. The students will view, examine, curate and reflect on the submissions and develop their own artistic, creative or architectural concepts. During the "Denkraum.Bauhaus" these results will be displayed. Students get an insight into architectural communication, participation processes and curating. The course is offered to students of Bachelor, Master, Diploma and State Examination.

Based on the results of a free project, the seminar explores the practice of occupying houses in Weimar in the 1990s. The goal is the collection and mapping of occupied houses. The students work on the historical background and carry out the research based on literature and archival research, conversations with contemporary witnesses and cinematic or photographic documentation. The course is offered by students for students and for Bachelor and Master students.

The design studio focuses on architectural strategies for the densification of a large housing estate in the district of Lichtenberg in the north-east of Berlin. Using the example of an apartment block built in the late 1980s in Neu-Hohenschönhausen, the project aims to develop and formulate design options for the densification and/or closing off of the block, which are based on urban spatial studies. The emphasis here is on the configuration of buildings and open spaces, infrastructure, contemporary floor plans suitable for individual and communal living, ground floors for public and semi-public uses, as well as the design of elevations. The project is aimed at highly motivated students who are interested in current topics related to housing and in critical reflection on associated issues. They should also have a good competency and experience in architectural design and its presentation in the form of drawings, models and visualisations.

The seminar includes an excursion to Dessau and Berlin from 6 to 9 May 2019 with different thematic references, visits and experiences. It also comprises film screenings on three days in May and June 2019, in cooperation with the Chair of Theory and History of Modern Architecture. The DEFA films - Spur der Steine (1966), Unser kurzes Leben (1981) and Die Architekten (1990) - show construction projects in the GDR, particularly for housing schemes in the post-war period. The screenings will be preceded by an introduction by Eva von Engelberg.

Tätig für den Fortschritt der Menschheit? Wir werden als Architekt oder Bauingenieurin, als Gestalter, Planerin oder Künstler, als Medienmanagerin für eine Gesellschaft der Veränderung gebildet und ausgebildet. Wir werden diese Veränderung mitgestalten und uns von ihr gestalten lassen müssen. Doch in welchen grundlegenden Vorstellungen vom Menschen und seiner Rolle in der Welt bewegen wir uns, während wir gestalten, entwerfen oder analysieren? Mit welchem Menschenbild und für welche Welt arbeiten wir? Welchen Einfluss hat diese Weltanschauung auf unser schöpferisches, planendes oder konstruierendes Tun?
Das Labor fürs Neue Land fordert Studierende aller Fakultäten dazu auf, in einem fakultätsübergreifenden Projekt gemeinschaftlich und aus verschiedenen Blickwinkeln die jeweilige disziplinäre Praxis vor grundlegenden Ideen von Gesellschaft zu reflektieren und von diesem Punkt aus gedankliche Vorausarbeit in die praktische Zukunft zu wagen. Im Grundlagenpart blicken wir vorausschauend in zentrale Gesellschaftsentwürfe der europäischen Philosophie zurück. Damit wollen wir das Verständnis für die ideengeschichtlichen Kontexte unseres eigenen Tuns und seiner Rahmenbedingungen erweitern und geistiges Maß nehmen für das Erdenken utopischer oder dystopischer Szenarien einer Zeit nach der (Post)Moderne. Im Anwendungsteil übersetzen wir diese in der Theorie gründenden Zukunftsbilder in konkrete Entwürfe, Konzepte oder Planungen, Designs oder Kunstwerke für eine Zeit nach unserer Zeit. Die fächerübergreifende Zusammenarbeit eröffnet uns die Möglichkeit, die Lebensganzheit einer zukünftigen Welt ahnbar werden zu lassen.
Für dieses Experiment verlassen wir Weimar und begeben uns an einen Ort im thüringischen Altenburg zwischen Stadt und Land, zwischen Stillstand und Aufbruch. Während mehrtägiger Arbeits- und Lebensaufenthalte entwickeln wir unsere Zukunftswerte und -werke. Unser Ausblick soll als Einblick in Form einer Ausstellung zur Summaery und vor Ort präsentiert werden.

The internationally oriented and transdisciplinary Hudson Valley Ecologies teaching research project focuses on the interrelations between city and countryside. The Hudson Valley is of great economic, ecological and cultural importance for New York City and the cities, villages and landscapes along the Hudson River. Areas for collective and individual research and design topics are to be developed in the course of the project and in cooperation with the Hudson Valley Initiative at GSAPP, Columbia University. The project is based on several interlinked teaching formats, including a seminar, an excursion to New York/ Hudson Valley in October 2019 and a design studio in the winter semester 2019/20. The seminar serves as an introduction to the Hudson Valley Ecologies project module that is to prepare students for the excursion. Within the course, the relevant literature, art and films will be studied to help understand different approaches to historical, social and architectural issues for which the Hudson Valley is a reference. It is open to highly motivated students who are interested in the current international discourse on architecture and urban design and who also have a good competency and some experience in architectural design and its presentation. Places will be allocated by the professorship on the basis of applications and personal discussions. Participation in both the seminar and excursion is a prerequisite for attending the design studio.

Am Anfang gibt es keinen Film als Ganzes, es existieren nur viele Stunden Material. Erst in der Montage entsteht die Struktur. Montage ist Auswahl und Anordnung. Im Montageprozess werden Entscheidungen getroffen, Einstellungen bewertet, Zusammenhänge beurteilt. Wenn wir urteilen, dann urteilen wir als Teil einer Gesellschaft sagte Hannah Arendt. Inwiefern zeigt sich das in einer Filmkonstruktion? Welcher Figur schreibt die Montage welche Eigenschaften zu und wie ist diese Zuschreibung gestaltet? Welchen Einfluss haben Auswahl und Anordnung auf die Geschlechterkonstruktion und was passiert, wenn diese Anordnung verändert wird?  De-und Remontagen von Filmszenen veranschaulichen wie einfach es ist, mit filmischen Mitteln stereotype Darstellung von Geschlecht herzustellen, fortzuschreiben oder aufzulösen. 

Der zweistündige Spaziergang mit anschließendem Gespräch befasst sich mit den Spuren, die Bauhausfrauen wie Marianne Brandt, Gunta Stölzl, Lou Scheper, Dörte Helm oder Julia Feininger in Weimar hinterlassen haben. Wo haben sie gelernt, gefeiert, gejobbt und wo waren ihre Werkstätten? Und wie waren die Frauen damals? Anders als heute?

Der Vortrag widmet sich einer Einführung in die Geschlechterstudien in MINT und Planung anhand von prominenten Fallbeispielen aus der Forschung. Außerdem werden Abschlussarbeiten aus dem bundesweit einmaligen Studienprogramm „Gender Pro MINT” der TU Berlin vorgestellt. Hierbei handelt es sich um Studienprojekte und Qualifikationsarbeiten in MINT und Planung, die um Perspektiven der Geschlechterforschung erweitert wurden. Diese Erweiterungen zeigen auf, wie Geschlechterstudien in Forschung und Lehre zu Fachkulturen, Wissen und Artefakten in MINT und Planung systematisch integriert werden können.

This seminar will examine contemporary feminist food production and art practices and kitchen counterculture in the context of alternative discourses and revolutionary movements. As food production, preparation, and consumption has become a subject of increasing academic focus due to its broad connections to culture, ecology and the environment, it has also been utilized within the arts to address topics as diverse as militarism, sustainability, environmental justice, cultural renewal and racism within the broader context of what could be termed ecofeminism.
The seminar will explore the connections formed between these themes and issues surrounding food production, preparation, and consumption as critiqued, affirmed or challenged by artistic practice, and to explore links to the origins and theoretical background of food related cultural processes.

Dem entgegen stehen feministische und queere Utopien wie das kontrasexuelle Manifest. Der Hörspaziergang begibt sich auf die Spuren solcher Utopien, um gemeinsam Wege nach Queertopia zu erkunden.

Die Vorlesungsreihe zur Geschichte des Städtebaus setzt sich mit dem architektonischen und städtebaulichen Denken von Schinkel bis heute auseinander. Architektur und Städtebau stehen seit der Aufklärung in einem dialektischen Verhältnis zueinander, dass bis heute krisenhaft ist. Die Architektur in Ihrer Suche nach Einzigartigkeit steht oft nicht mehr dem Städtebau als einfache raumbildende Fassade zur Verfügung. Die damit anhaltende Auflösung der Stadtstruktur hat sich trotz der kritischen Reflexion der Postmoderne und der anschließenden Rekonstruktion der Stadt nicht aufhalten lassen. Diese Erosion geht einher mit dem Verlust städtischer und architektonischer Konventionen und entzieht der Architektur den notwendigen Bezugsrahmen.
Ein Fokus der Vorlesung liegt auf Entwurfsmethoden und -strategien und einem Einblick in die Gedankenwelt einzelner Entwerfer, um zu verstehen, wie sie diesem Konflikt begegnet sind.

Welchen Einfluss hat das Welt- und Menschenbild auf das schöpferische Tun? Was muss sich verändern, um die Gesellschaft der Zukunft zu gestalten? Das Seminar untersucht unter der Fragestellung „Was ist die Idee, in wir leben?“ zentrale Gesellschaftsentwürfe der europäischen Philosophie. Die Studierenden nehmen eine eigene Standortbestimmung vor und erweitern die ideengeschichtlichen Kontexte ihres eigenen Tuns und seiner Rahmenbedingungen. Zentrale Themen sind unter anderem das Verhältnis vom Menschen zu Artefakten, Technik, Arbeit und Konsumwaren.
Das Lehrangebot kann unabhängig vom Projektmodul belegt werden.

"We will blow up Weimar. [...] Nobody and nothing will be spared. [...]" proclaims a Dadaist leaflet from February 1919. The course discusses various inspiring documents, artistic strategies and presentation techniques from art, politics, design and architecture. The focus is on the avant-gardes of the 20th century. The students will reproduce some of the documents and stage them for the summaery. Part of the course is a workshop on template creation, editing and realization on a Risograph printer.
A consultation before participationin the course is necessary. The consultation will take place on 02/04/19 between 10 am to 12 am in room 202, Riso-Labor, M5. Alternatively, a letter of motivation can be sent to sebstian.helm [at] uni-weimar.de.

The Bauhaus walks are tours offered by students for visitors and guests of the university who are interested in the history of the Bauhaus in Weimar and would like to visit places of the university's architectural and artistic heritage. This seminar conveys key concepts for the idea and development of the Bauhaus and its protagonists and deals intensively with places in Weimar that can document traces of this history. It is designed to give students the ability to lead a Bauhaus walk. It includes face-to-face events in the form of compact seminars and visits to museums in Weimar. We will deal with the history of the historic Bauhaus, with the migration paths of its personalities, but also with the ways of its objects and the difficulty capturing its almost 100-year history.

The course focuses on the conception and production of a Gesamtkunstwerk for the genre of immersive music theatre, freely and radically interpreting the 100. anniversary of the Weimar Bauhaus. The design of 360-degree performance shall include and integrate elements of immersive media art, music composition, live performance, 360-degree sound design and fulldome projection. The students realize their own individual projects and run the event management and marketing. Guest lecturers and freelance artists are invited to provide the necessary skills (After Effects for Fulldome, Forms and Contents of 360-Degree Media Design). The resulting production will premiere at the 2019 FullDome Festival in Jena. The course is a cooperation with the University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar and the FullDome Festival.

The lecture comprises the strategic process of maintaining, improving, and upholding a (media) brand.

The aim of this course is to reflect and discuss selected research topics in the context of media, brands and communication in order to prepare the students to successfully write a research paper afterwards. On the basis of an empirical market research study the students will develop a communication campaign.

Machen! … und aus Fehlern lernen. In diesem Fachmodul werden die Teilnehmenden ausschließlich in Teams arbeiten, idealerweise bestehend aus Studierenden unterschiedlicher Fachrichtungen. Anhand von drei speziellen Aufgabenstellungen zu je drei Wochen werden Strategien und Werkzeuge zur Ideenfindung und Umsetzung entwickelt und praktisch angewandt. Dabei sind Teamwork und Kommunikation gefragt: Ideen mit der Gruppe diskutieren, das eigene Ego zurückstellen und die speziellen Kenntnisse jedes Mitglieds nutzen, um zu besseren Ergebnissen zu kommen. 1 + 1 = 3.

The Tower of Fire is a sculpture by Bauhaus teacher Johannes Itten from 1920. It combines architecture, sculpture, music and design. It symbolizes the idea of the Bauhaus - the unity of all artistic disciplines. Almost 100 years later a new Bauhaus Tower will be erected on the campus. The vertical element will set a landmark and represents the link between art, construction and function.
The students' examination of the topic ranges from the development of a design concept to the detailing and procurement of the materials to the joint realisation of the tower structure. In the concept phase, the project participants examine different functional aspects and evaluate them on the basis of various parameters such as feasibility, appropriateness, aesthetics and appropriateness. This is followed by detailing, prefabrication and erection of the building.
The project participants independently develop a concept for a vertical structure with a height of up to 7 meters and define a special function for the same. On the one hand, the tower must fulfil the self-chosen, possibly complex function. On the other hand it must be constructed so simple to be built up by the group. The aim is the planning, detailing and construction within the Summer semester 2019.
For all participants of the project module "Der Bauhausturm" the "Bauseminar" is obligatory!

The lectures deal with the historical evolution of public buildings and public spaces. Two aspects are important: function and architectural space. History has shown that programmatic ideas and spatial ideas correspond within their own time but that form does not always follow function. In many cases, typical spatial forms are capable of coping with a diversity of functional requirements. Public buildings and public spaces are as much a result of conflicting architectural ideas proposed by different periods of history as they are the result of a specific programmatic idea of their own time. Ideal buildings and ideal spaces are the exception; in most cases, architects are concerned with the reconciliation of conflicting spatial ideals and conflicting programmatic ideas. The lecture course supports the idea that the intuitive design process is part of a greater architectural history.

The course is closely connected to the other seminar in the unit Minor Cinemas. It focuses on independent documentary film-making as counter-practice or minor cinema. Two thirds of the class will be in the form of an excursion to the independent documentary film festival Freiburger Film Forum.
During the festival, we will attend the screenings together and participate in master classes and public discussions with film-makers. In preparation for the excursion, we will read and discuss key texts on documentary and ethnographic film-making. 
Travelling costs and festival tickets will be covered by the Faculty’s excursion funding.

Albania is one of the most unknown countries in Europe. Over centuries, it suffered of political changes and repressions. In Tirana, the capital city, one can observe those cultural, social and political eras. Architecture and Urbanism witness these times.
The seminar and excursion aim to discover an alien city in a new cultural context. Students will transfer their knowledge from the theoretical sessions to architectural objects. Thus, historical, cultural, political, social and economic interrelations will become obvious. Furthermore, photography will be a medium of knowledge. Supported by Tobias Adam, photographer, Students will analyse existing images of built objects and they themselves will take photographs of buildings and urban structures. The findings will be collected in a corresponding architecture guide of Tirana.

The thesis that our perception has a history has long been one of Media Studies’ central themes. This course investigates this thesis of the historicity of perception anew by situating it in different places were human perception has been investigated. The students will explore different case studies in the history of perception research and its media: in physiology and psychology, in artistic research, architecture or design and they will analyse the experimental setting, the material culture and the specific perceptual practices. These different case studies will examine what it could mean that our perception obtained a history.
Prerequisite for this course is an interest to explore the intersection of theoretical and experimental knowledge, an investigative use of your senses, and an openness to encounter new perceptions.

In recent decades, scholars tried to look beyond vision in order to include other, long more excluded senses of sound, touch, smell, taste and synaesthesia in their account of media, science and society. This seminar explores new ways of studying optical media, for example by integrating the findings of studies on other senses and their media. The students will work with selected objects from collections of nearby museums (e.g. Deutsches Optisches Museum in Jena), to reconstruct the mediality of historical perceptual practices. The central questions of this seminar are methodological: How to include material objects and sense experiences when studying media history? How can we work with these old optical devices to make them challenge our current-day understanding of media and perception? Against a background of readings from Media Archaeology, History of instruments, History of Science, Museum Studies, and the latest explorations in Historical Reconstructions, and Digital Exhibitions (e.g. 3D animations, or visualised databases), the participants will work on one object and design a new way of access to it. 
Several sessions will take place on location.

The fact that the sense of hearing is a sense of proximity, for which it is characteristic that stimuli that meet it are difficult to distance, links it to questions and ideas of subjectivity and identity as well as to those of physical, mental and political orientations in the world and also to questions of vulnerability. Furthermore, it must be considered how the sense of hearing functions in the concert of the other senses and which media and cultural practices influence and shape its genealogy.How do concepts of disobedience relate to aesthetic dimensions of the entanglement of hearing and sound and how can atmospheres, moods, affects and even judgements be acoustically grasped and implemented?These and many more questions about acoustic phenomena and theories will be discussed in the plenum and explored in depth on the basis of reading the anthology "Acoustic Turn" edited by Petra Meyer.

This class focuses on cinema as emancipatory and political practice with a concentration on so-called third and fourth cinemas, which have emerged as answer to colonial living conditions and social oppression in the decades following the 1960s. During recent decades, third cinema has developed styles questioning the modes of production and the aesthetics and values of US and European auteur cinemas, focusing either on capitalist or individualist film-making practices. In accordance with this,the course will discuss examples of Latin American film-making, as well as from African cinema, in recent decades. Fourth cinema was and is a constant struggle for self-representation and a challenge to western models of narration, history, subjectivity and time. It can be understood as a way of re-working and challenging modes of representation and introduces new world images and cosmologies to cinematic representation. Both notions – third and fourth cinema – must not be understood as hierarchised, but rather as historical counter-movements to first and second cinema. The course contains screenings and discussions of key films of third and fourth cinema.

The seminar combines the theory and practice of city photography with urban and cultural views of the city and its depiction in photography. The interplay between photography, interpretation, practice and theoretical considerations should be at the center of the interdisciplinary seminar. Despite globalizing processes, cities continue to have their ascribed identities, such as the cozy coffeehouse culture in Vienna. These stereotypes are in conflict with everyday urban life and individual perceptions, yet to a certain extent determine the city's imagination. In this course, the photographic "images" of the city are taken into consideration. This includes, on the one hand, the theory-based approach to the image of urban space and, on the other hand, one's own photographic exploration of urban space.

Today, about 55 percent of the world’s population is thought to be residing in urban areas. That is to say, most of us are living in the cities, and we almost never leave—houses, schools, ofices, shops, cafes, and all others are located within the boundaries of them. Cities indicate many clues of the culture, habits, and character composed by its residents and also visitors. But do we really pay attention toour surroundings? Are the streets that we pass by every day only functioned as the bridges taking us from A to B?We are surrounded by countless forms, colors, styles— Can the cities help us create?
Through the lecture series Seeking Unseen, public spaces will be discovered within the contexts of design, art, and architecture. The theoretical part will focus on seeing the details in the city, doing research to them and get to know the possible historical and cultural meanings. The second part will go through many work examples: Artworks, design works, books, movements, poems and so on. The practical part will be the excursions to Berlin and Weimar—with the attention of comparing diferent scales, finding similarities and distinctions, changing perspectives. After the tours, the participants will be asked to come up with projects/ideas in their field of choice.

Die Zeitenwende um 1900 ist von der Divergenz eines voranschreitenden Modernismus und eines Ausharrens in einem überkommenen Traditionalismus geprägt. In der Folge wird die erste Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts von einer Vielzahl unterschiedlicher Gesellschaftsentwürfe und alternativer Lebensreformbewegungen bestimmt, die sich vor allem in der Architektur ausdrücken. Dabei geht es nicht nur um die Suche nach neuen Wohnraum-Konzepten als vielmehr um ganzheitliche Idealvorstellungen einer neuen Lebenswelt.
Das Seminar hat zum Ziel, anhand ausgewählter Beispiele einen Überblick über die mannigfaltigen Formen des Utopischen in der Architektur von 1900 bis 1950 zu vermitteln. Neben den realisierten Bauten stehen insbesondere Manifeste und nicht verwirklichte Projekte im Mittelpunkt des Interesses. Im Blickfeld von Theorie und Praxis, Architektur und Städtebau, Lebenswirklichkeit und Utopie soll die Innovationskraft des Architektonischen erfasst und im kulturhistorischen Kontext der Zeit verortet werden. Themen sind u. a. die Gartenstädte Letchworth und Hellerau, Bruno Tauts Glasarchitektur, Wohnräume bei Le Corbusier und Mies van der Rohe, Speers Germania.

The concept of the class is to introduce students to different sorts of 3d design tools such as 3dsMax, V-Ray and Unity3d, also basic animation tools, professional rendering, 360-degree rendering, exporting 3d files for Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality. The class aims to help participants to improve their presentations skills, by using different digital tools. In this way, student participants shall gain the added preferable skill to present their projects using new 3d software.
The class is open to all design students of the Bauhaus-University Weimar. Students can either work on their main project or start developing the new ideas during the class. There will be consultation days during May and June with class.
