Die Bauhaus-Universität Weimar identifiziert sich seit der Umbenennung im Jahr 1996 explizit wenn auch kritisch mit der bedeutendsten Phase ihrer Institutionsgeschichte: Das Staatliche Bauhaus Weimar existierte jedoch nur sechs Jahre — zwischen der Gründung im April 1919 und dem erzwungenen Umzug nach Dessau im April 1925. Angesichts dieser Fokussierung geraten mehr als 150 Jahren wechselvoller Geschichte zwischen Kaiserreich, Weimarer Republik, Drittem Reich und DDR aus dem Blickfeld. Und dennoch bestimmen Sie das Profil der heutigen Universität: Warum wurde an der Kunstschule gegründeten Institution ein halbes Jahrhundert lang keine Kunst unterrichtet? Warum etablierte sich erst nach dem Weggang des berühmten Bauhauses eine ordentliche Architekturausbildung in Weimar? Und seit wann entwickelte sich das Ingenieurwesen zu einem bestimmenden Faktor der Weimarer Hochschule?

In dem Seminar »Das Bauhaus, Weimar und der ganze Rest …« wollen wir die Verflechtung der Hochschulgeschichte mit den politischen, sozialen und künstlerischen Umbrüchen seit 1860 beleuchten und dabei wichtige Personen und Werke in den Blick nehmen. Im Zentrum steht dabei die Frage: Welche Aufgabe weisen die verschiedenen politischen Systeme einer Kunst- und Gestaltungshochschule zu und welche personellen und konzeptionellen Akzente resultieren daraus? Das Seminar lädt interessierte Studierende aller Fakultäten und Studiengänge dazu ein, die einzigartige Geschichte unserer Hochschule gemeinsam zu erkunden und sie in der kulturellen Landschaft Thüringens zu lokalisieren.

Das Seminar »Das Bauhaus, Weimar und der ganze Rest …« findet in Kooperation mit dem Fachmodul »History Moves: Vom Buch zum Bildschirm« statt. Das Ziel der Zusammenarbeit besteht darin, ein Ereignis der Hochschulgeschichte zu erforschen und daraus eine kurzen Lehrfilm zu entwickeln.

In einem interdisziplinären Modul soll der Bauhaus Urban Energy Hubs zunächst im Wintersemester 2022/23 geplant und anschließend im Sommersemester 2023 als Pavillon auf dem Campus der Bauhaus-Universität Weimar gebaut werden. Der Pavillon wird als interaktiver Demonstrator zukunftsweisende Architektur-, Energie- und Nutzungskonzepte repräsentieren. Er wird zugleich als prominenter Treffpunkt an der Universität fungieren, in dem Studierende und Forschende zusammenkommen.

Die Lehrveranstaltung kann entweder als Tutorium (Teilnahmebescheinigung) oder als Wahlpflichtmodul (3 ECTS) belegt werden.

Die im 2-jahrestakt stattfindende Betonkanu-Regatta ist eine Mischung aus Beton – und Bootsbautechnik, gestalterischem Geschick, Medienpräsenz und sportlichen Wettkampf. Seit vielen Jahren nimmt die Bauhaus – Universität mit zahlreichen Studierenden und der Unterstützung des F. A. Finger-Institutes an diesem Wettbewerb teil und wird immer wieder vor die komplexe Aufgabe gestellt, die Festigkeit und Wasserdichtheit von Beton so zu nutzen, dass nicht nur robuste Kanus entstehen, sondern solche, die das Rennen gewinnen können. Dabei wird nicht nur Augenmerk auf die Funktionalität gelegt, sondern es gilt auch im Gestaltungswettbewerb zu überzeugen. Zunehmend werden auch steigende Anforderungen in Richtung Nachhaltigkeit an die teilnehmenden Teams gestellt – es gilt nun das bereits vorhandene Wissen mit neuen Techniken und nachhaltigen Optionen nicht nur zu kombinieren, sondern auch zu optimieren – sei es bei der Mischung, der Schalung oder der Regattakleidung.

Ziel des Projektes ist es die Fähigkeiten der vier Fakultäten zu vereinen – Entwurf, Konstruktion und Mischung, Gestaltung und Medienpräsenz – und so als starkes Team zu interagieren. Die Studierenden des Projektes erlernen Erfahrungen rund um den vorherrschenden Baustoff Beton, lernen aber auch ein Projekt im Team zu koordinieren und eigenverantwortlich Aufgaben zu übernehmen, Fähigkeiten einzusetzen und die Einzelergebnisse zu einem Gesamtkonzept zusammenzufügen. Dabei ist Ziel einen neuen ökonomischen und ökologischen Gesamtentwurf als Vorbereitung zum Bau der nächsten Betonkanus zu entwickeln. Die Studierenden sollen im Rahmen des Projektes die Chance haben mit unterschiedlichen Baustoffen zu experimentieren und so anschließend in Zusammenarbeit deren Verwendungsmöglichkeit für die verschiedenen Ansprüche für den Bau eines Betonkanus abzuwägen.

Anhand von Schreibübungen und Analyse von Case Studies vor allem aus der Filmbranche werden die Anforderungen an Projektbeschreibungen in ihren verschiedenen Längenanforderungen (Exposé / Treatment) erörtert.

Eine Konfrontation und Einübung den richtigen und passenden Ton für die Projekte zu finden. Die TeilnehmerInnen bringen eigene Projektideen in den Kurs ein. Im besten Fall werden kurze filmische Trailer für eine Film- oder Formatidee hergestellt.

Von allgemeinen Projektbeschreibung bis zum Selbstdarstellung – immer kommt es auf die richtige Mischung von Information und Ton an. Wie findet man die richtige Sprache für das Projekt? Wie kann ich mein Ziel bei der/dem Leser am besten erreichen? Die Arbeit und Analyse von Beispielen aus der Textarbeit der Filmbranche dienen als Blaupause für eine Textarbeit die verdeutlicht und neugierig auf das jeweilige Vorhaben macht.

Der Kurs ermutigt und ertüchtigt die TeilnehmerInnen – aller Fakultäten – für eine Berufswelt nach der Uni. Eine Welt in der man präzise und einnehmend schreibend für eigene Vorhaben kämpfen muss.

In diesem fünftägigen Produktionsworkshop versuchen wir die Frage zu klären: Wie werden Filme erfolgreich geplant und umgesetzt? Dafür schauen wir uns unter anderem folgende Themenkomplexe an:

• Übersicht über Abteilungen, Gewerke und Positionen
• Produktionstechnisches auflösen von Drehbüchern
• Drehplan Erstellung inklusive Einführung in entsprechende Programme
• Wege der Kommunikation mit dem Team vor und während der Dreharbeiten
• Umgang mit Drehorten und den Aspekten der Motivbesichtigung
• Erstellen von Tagesdispositionen und Gefahrenbewertungen
• Materialbedarf für die gängigsten Szenarien
• Berücksichtigung von Umweltaspekten, Arbeitsschutz und Arbeitssicherheit

Ziel ist es, auf die Umsetzungsrelevanten Aspekte eines Filmprojektes einzugehen und zu vermitteln, wie diese am effektivsten zu handhaben sind. Es soll ein moderat umfänglicher Einblick gegeben werden, der zum Weiterdenken und Reflektieren der eigenen Arbeitsweise anregt. Dabei sollen stets der Maßstab und der Möglichkeitsrahmen von studentischen Filmproduktionen berücksichtigt werden.

Es sollen die praktischen Bedingungen der experimentellen Bildgestaltung erforscht werden. In diesem Modul liegt der Fokus auf dem Prozess und nicht dem Ergebnis. Die Studierenden sollen lernen, sich einem Thema anzunähern, ohne den Blick direkt auf ein mögliches Resultat zu richten. Ein ergebnisorientierter Arbeitsprozess führt oft zu sich immer weiter selbst referenzierenden Arbeiten. Untersucht man naturwissenschaftliche Phänomene wie die Refraktion von Glas oder Voronoidiagramme auf ihre kreative Verwertbarkeit hin, können dadurch neue Workflows etabliert werden, deren Fokus auf dem Experimentieren und dem Zufall basiert.

Komplexe ingenieurtechnische Projekte erfordern neben den fachlichen Fähigkeiten der Beteiligten auch in hohem Maße überfachliche Fähigkeiten, wie beispielsweise Kreativität, Zusammenarbeit, Kommunikation, Kritisches Denken, Informationskompetenz und Führungskompetenz. Diese überfachlichen Kompetenzen werden im Studium ansatzweise durch Projektarbeit vermittelt. Überwiegend ist die Entwicklung dieser Fähigkeiten jedoch im Rahmen des Studiums dem Zufall überlassen. Dieses Tutorium fördert die Entwicklung dieser Fähigkeiten systematisch, indem es die Studierenden bei der Durchführung komplexer Projekte in einer standardisierten virtuellen Umgebung, einem kommerziellen Multiplayer Online Game (MOG) begleitet.

Ziele des Tutoriums: Wettbewerbsorientierte Entwicklung der überfachlichen Fähigkeiten der Studierenden in möglichst interdisziplinärer Arbeitsgruppe durch Nutzung einer einfach bereitstellbaren standardisierten virtuellen Umgebung.

Theoretische Grundlage des Tutoriumkonzepts sind wissenschaftliche Untersuchungen (z.B. Steinkuehler et al.), dass in virtuellen Umgebungen, die von MOGs bereitgestellt werden, Lernen gefördert wird und insbesondere überfachliche Fähigkeiten trainiert werden.

Das MOG EVE Online ist eine solche virtuelle Umgebung, in der der Handlungserfolg u.a. durch sorgfältige Planung, durch Spezialisierung der einzelnen Lernenden, durch die Teamarbeit, durch die Absprache mit anderen Teams und durch Analyse der Handlungsoptionen zusammen mit kreativer Handlungsgestaltung gefördert wird. Die internen Simulationsmodelle werden nach wissenschaftlichen Erkenntnissen entworfen. EVE Online gibt es in einer Gratis-Version. Die Software kann auf jedem handelsüblichen Notebook betrieben werden, so dass weder Hard- noch Softwarekosten entstehen.

Das Tutorium findet wöchentlich für 60 min in einer Online-Präsenzveranstaltung statt. Es wird davon ausgegangen, dass die Studierenden über die wöchentliche Präsenzveranstaltung einzeln oder in Gruppen an der Erreichung der Handlungsziele arbeiten. Das Tutorium adressiert zwar vorrangig ingenieurmäßige Vorgehensweisen, ist aber offen für Studierende aller Fakultäten.

Als 1919 das Staatliche Bauhaus in Weimar gegründet wurde, entstand ein neuer Typus Kunstschule.
Die neuartige Lehre definierte in einer Synthese aus Praxis-und Theorielernen „eine Art technischkünstlerisches Laboratorium“. Kunst in den Alltag integriert sollte zu einem ganzheitlichen Verständnis von Gesellschaft und Leben führen und deren Gestaltung zum Gemeinschaftsakt erheben. Das vornehmliche Ziel des Gründungsdirektors war der allseitig gebildete Mensch, dem die Zusammenhänge aller Lebensbereiche wichtiger sind, als seine formalen Einzelteile.
Das Staatliche Bauhaus war von seinem Gründer Walter Gropius als eine Gemeinschaft aller am Bau Tätigen gedacht. Anliegen war es, politische Forderungen nach Überwindung gesellschaftlicher Unterschiede in neue ästhetische Formen zu übersetzen. Auch die schrittweise Verankerung eines neuartigen Bildungsansatzes sollte die regionalen Beschränkungen in Kunst und Handwerk zu Gunsten einer internationalisierten Sicht auflösen, um zu neuen, allgemein verbindlichen Formen zu gelangen.
Die Installation des Gropius-Zimmer-Pavillons wird fortlaufend auf bedeutenden öffentlichen Plätzen der Partnerstädte Weimars als ein Bauhaus- und Weimarbotschafter errichtet. Er bildet die Grundlinien des Direktorenzimmers nach und extrahiert den ursprünglich geschützten Innenraum zur Metapher von Direktorenamt und Ideenkapsel. Eine öffentliche Raumfigur, freizugänglich im jeweiligen Stadtraum.
Anliegen dieser luftigen Rauminstallation ist das Gewahrwerden der eigenen Rolle in einer demokratischen Gesellschaft: im Recht der Mitgestaltung liegt auch die Aufgabe der Mitverantwortung; sie geht uns alle an. In einer Demokratie sind wir keine Zaungäste, sondern Handelnde, jeder in seinem Bereich. Aus solchen Individualstrukturen heraus verantwortet jeder das Gesamtprojekt Gesellschaft.
Die avantgardistische Tradition des Bauhauses aufgreifend, fragen wir: Neuerungen stehen immer an, aber mit welchen zeitgemäßen Methoden begegnen wir ihnen? Wie kann Bildung über den Kanon von Bildungseinrichtungen hinaus mit so viel unterschiedlichen Gruppeninteressen wie möglich interagieren? Wie können Räume des Cyberspace mit denen des urbanen Alltags ineinandergreifen und so die verrücktesten Konstellationen an Begegnungen und Zusammenspiel erzeugen, um inspiriert, neugierig und mutig gesellschaftliche Umbrüche kreativ zu meistern.
Im Seminar wollen wir mit Euch, Studierende unterschiedlichster Fakultäten und Euren jeweiligen Expertisen, entweder den GZ-Pavillon oder andere Raum-Installationen als Bildungsräume im öffentlichen Raum durch Verwendung analoger, hybrider und digitaler Methoden bereichern und sie als Space-Maschine zum 100jährigen Jubiläum der „Great Bauhaus Exhibition“ erproben.

To see, to experience spaces, places and people that you wouldn't find in Weimar is the idea of this field trip. We are planning to spend three days in Berlin and one in Halle. We will meet fashion designers, artists, art critics and theorists, visit museums and a crematorium, and do many things more to enrich our experience about the body in architecture and design.

Beforehand, we will draw an image about the people and topics that we will encounter and prepare short presentations for the field trip. Our observations and experiences will be documented in photographs, objets trouvé and texts to form a digital diagram of our knowledge when our Berlin memories will slowly fade out.

„Plan a city for girls, and it will work for everyone!“: Unter diesem Motto haben die Vereinten Nationen 2021 weltweit zu gendersensibler Stadtplanung aufgerufen. Im Oktober 2021 ging dann die erste deutsche Stadt an den Start: Weimar, mit der Gründung der Initiative HerCity Weimar. Seitdem haben wir unzählige Stadtspaziergänge, partizipative Workshops, Umfragen, PublicSpacePublicLife-Messungen und Diskussionsrunden mit der Stadtverwaltung veranstaltet und fünf Handlungsfelder identifiziert: Angebote & Ausstattung und Mobilität & Barrierefreiheit, Sicherheit & soziale Kontrolle, Sichtbarkeit & Aneignung, Repräsentation & Würdigung. Daran wollen wir nun mit euch anknüpfen und konkrete Konzepte für ein gendersensibles Weimar entwickeln.

Entwickle zusammen mit einem interdisziplinären Team innovative Lösungsansätze, um die Biodiversität im urbanen Raum zu schützen!

Der Rückgang der biologischen Vielfalt hat sich in den vergangenen Jahrzehnten dramatisch beschleunigt. Artenvielfalt ist jedoch unsere Lebensgrundlage. Ohne die Natur, ohne Pflanzen und Tiere könnten wir nicht existieren. Der Verlust wichtiger Pflanzen- und Tierarten hat enorme negative Auswirkungen auf unser Ökosystem und ist damit eine unterschätzte Bedrohung und ein ebenso drängendes Problem wie der Klimawandel. Dieser Herausforderung kannst du dich im WiSe 2022/23 mit unserer Unterstützung im Rahmen einer »Innovation Challenge« stellen. In unserem Bauhaus.Modul lernst du agile Methoden aus den Bereichen Design Thinking, Prototyping und Business Modelling kennen und wendest diese gemeinsam mit deinem Team anhand eurer Challenge direkt an. Dabei setzt ihr euch intensiv mit den unternehmerischen und strategischen Aspekten eures Innovationsprojektes auseinander und stärkt gemeinsam eure Problemlösungskompetenz. Als Coaches der Gründerwerkstatt neudeli begleiten wir euch durch den gesamten Prozess.

Parametric feature-based 3D-models are the base for current CAD systems used in mechanical and civil engineering as well as in architecture and other disciplines. An example is FreeCAD, an OpenSource-CAD-application with functionality similar to commercial programs such as CATIA, SolidWorks or Solid Edge. In addition to the creation of models, FreeCAD also allows for analysis (e.g. FEM), simulation, rendering and preparation for 3D printing. It can be extended through scripts in Python or plugins in C++.

The participants get to know typical CAD functionality demonstrated in a practical example, and beyond that learn about the theoretical foundations of CAD-modelling, the various modelling paradigms and the underlying data models. They come to know how to use Python scripts in order to analyse CAD models and automate modelling tasks. Practical work will be conducted in tandems to apply the basics in guided exercises first and then proceed to domain-specific projects from architecture, engineering, design.

Nach dem erfolgreichen Start des Projekts „Möbel Machen Mensa“ im letzten Semester wird hier nun die Fortsetzung angeboten. Wer die Ergebnisse bereits live im Mensafoyer gesehen hat und Lust hat selbst Einfluss auf die Gestaltung zu nehmen, ist in diesem Kurs genau richtig.

Wieder gibt es für Studierende die besondere Möglichkeit sich aktiv und kreativ an der Gestaltung und dem sozialen Klima der Mensa und des Mensafoyers zu beteiligen. Konkret werden Themenfelder wie der Überdachte Außenbereich und die Begrünung der Mensa sowie kleinere Ergänzungen zum bereits bestehenden Mobiliar behandelt.

In enger Teamarbeit werden wir zusammen mögliche Entwürfe für konkrete Möbel und Objekte planen, designen und schlussendlich alles in den Werkstätten fertigen, sodass die Räumlichkeiten der Mensa weiter gestaltet und belebt werden.

What and who is "the" body? And how does our design practice align with "this" body? Current discourses around gender, racialization, handicap or age allow the question: How can a design practice be justified that clings to a (!) normative body? Especially in architecture this is still frequently practiced and since the early 20th century scholars of history and theory of architecture include "the body" as a general reference in their theories – but don't we urgently need an update of this general reference?

The course combines different forms of teaching and learning (workshops, group teaching, individual consultations, presentations, talks, design classes), with students, scholars and artists from various disciplines.

Im Geiste des historischen Bauhauses wollen wir experimentelle Materialstudien zum Werkstoff Metall (Aluminium, Kupfer, Messing, Bronze) durchführen. Unser Ziel besteht darin, die gestalterischen Charakteristika und Materialeigenschaften des Werkstoffes Metall durch physische Modelle und Experimente herauszuarbeiten. Konkret soll ein Objekt entworfen und umgesetzt werden, welches die gestalterische Vielfalt dieses Werkstoffes unterstreicht. Ob das eine Lampe, ein Tisch oder ein gänzlich anderes Objekt ist, bleibt den Entwerfenden dabei selbst überlassen.

Die Hürden zur Bearbeitung von Metall sind relativ hoch, wir wollen uns daher einer sehr einfachen, aber mächtigen Fertigungstechnik bedienen. Dem Metallguss mithilfe von Formen aus Styrodur und Gusssand (Lost-Foam-Casting). Die Formen werden wir im Laufe des Seminars einerseits händisch mithilfe von Heißtdrahtschneider, aber auch mit Hilfe von digitalen Modellen und einer CNC-gesteuerten Fräse herstellen. Beim Lost-Foam-Casting handelt es sich um eine verhältnismäßig umweltschonende Methode des Gießens von Metall. Der Gussand kann dabei vielfach wiederverwendet werden und so entstehen nur geringe Mengen von Abfall. Gerade durch die Möglichkeiten der individuellen Formgebung kann und soll besonders materialsparend mit dem Werkstoff Metall experimentiert werden.

In 1964 Marshall McLuhan published Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man, one of the most important books of media theory. The term “extension of man” directs immediately to the human body. Looking at a prosthesis: Where does the body end and where begins something else? If you use a wheelchair, what do you think about Spanish steps? If you are a transsexual person, how do you perceive public spaces in different cities? Is a data body a “real” body or just an extension that is not linked materially to a “living” body?

With the help of six talks by scholars, designers, artists the seminar will shed a light on different concepts of the body in architecture and its impact on design methodologies.

Our goal will be that each of you develops an attitude that allows you to argue profoundly and convincingly about the relationship between body and architecture.

In this seminar, media experience designer Stefan Kraus (MXZEHN) give students an insight into visual programming with the creative coding environment TouchDesigner (derivative.ca).

Data is not only an important inspiration for design but emerges as a building material in the creation of interactive media and spaces. Data allows us to analyse and understand the complexity of the natural and social world in an unprecedented manner, revealing previously hidden relationships between them. Meanwhile, creative coding tools have further developed and design-friendly metaphors like visual programming open up new playgrounds for artists and designers beyond pure code.

The visual programming environment TouchDesigner offers a relatively simple, visual approach to the creation of data driven animations and environments. In this course, students will explore openly available datasets, learning how to extract and visualise relevant information as interactive media applications. Emphasis will lie on the idea that data unveils itself through critical and artistic interpretation, an outcome that is not inevitable but formed through the creative design process.

Was unterscheidet ein virtuelles Studio von einem greenscreen Studio? Was für Geschichten kann man im virtuellen Studio erzählen und welche Kamera- und Lichttechnik ist dafür nötig?

In diesem Kurs entwickeln wir ein Video, das alle Teilnehmenden gemeinsam als Team in einem virtuellen Studio in Potsdam Babelsberg realisieren werden. In dem Kurs werden die technischen Besonderheiten einer virtuellen Produktion vermittelt, ebenso wie Kenntnisse einer normalen Filmproduktion.

Je nach persönlichem Schwerpunkt der Teilnehmenden, wird es mehr um die Entwicklung der 3D Welt mit der Unreal Engine oder der Vorbereitung und Umsetzung der Studiodreharbeiten gehen: Vom Studiobau, über Casting bis zum Testdreh. Der Kurs richtet sich sowohl an Studierende mit Videoerfahrung als auch an Studierende mit 3D & Unreal Erfahrung sowie an Studierende mit Erfahrung im Set- oder Modellbau.

This course invites the students to understand cinema beyond the limits of the frame. We will explore the intermedial encounter between film [audiovisual], installation art [space], and performatives arts [body]. As time-based media technologies advance, the cinematic experience has been in constant transformation extending beyond the traditional movie theatre. Our goal is to find experimental narrative tools while learning from artists whose work goes beyond the border of one media. We will challenge existing notions of cinema as a passive consumption media, embracing the interactivity of digital technologies and experimenting with immersive techniques.

‘Breaking the frame’ also means addressing perspective beyond the dominant gaze of the traditional Film institutions. Queer, feminist and decolonial epistemologies are part of our discussions.

At the end of the course we will make a proposal for a collective exhibition, showing our experiments together at the Winterwerkshau 2023.

Im Seminar werden theoretische Texte gelesen und verhandelt, die verschiedene Dimensionen und Perspektiven von Sound und Hören eröffnen. Anhand von Stücken aus verschiedenen Feldern auditiver Kunst widmet sich das Seminar dem Hören, Beschreiben und Reflektieren von Sound. Damit wird ein offener Werkzeugkasten des Lesens, Schreibens und Verhandelns rund um Sound und Klangkünste angeboten. Nicht zuletzt sind diese Techniken in verschiedenen Momenten der Soundproduktion selbst hilfreich und inspirierend.

In diesem Seminar geht es also darum, Sound nicht einfach Sound sein zu lassen. Denn die Beschreibung und Verhandlung von Sound gehören zu den Praktiken, durch die Sounds das werden können, was sie sind. Zu lesen, was andere über Sound schreiben, heißt auch, sich in verschiedene Umgangsweisen mit Sound reinzudenken. Und die Beschreibung von Sound impliziert ein bestimmtes Hinhören. So können Sounds nicht nur auf andere, neue Weise gehört werden – so öffnet sich auch ein Raum von Möglichkeiten, was Sound sein und werden kann. Beim Produzieren von Sound und Klangkunst kann der Umgang mit diesen Möglichkeitsräumen wiederum helfen, neue Wege und Lösungen zu finden.

Seit Duchamp sehen sich Kunst- und Alltagsobjekte mitunter zum Verwechseln ähnlich. Oft wird dann vorschnell der Begriff ‚Readymade‘ verwendet, selbst wenn die implizierten Konzepte in jeder Hinsicht mit Duchamp brechen. Der Neologismus ‚Post-Readymade‘ soll unser Gespür für die transformierende Rezeption schärfen, welche Duchamps Konzept in den letzten 100 Jahren erfahren hat. Von Objekt zu Objekt führt uns dieses Seminar durch die Kunstgeschichte von 1910 bis heute. Objekte werden als subversiv modifizierte Coca-Cola-Flaschen in den Warenstrom eingespeist, lösen sich als Bonbons im Mund der Museumsbesucher auf, oder widersprechen als affektgeladene Relikte Duchamps Ästhetik der Indifferenz.

Explainer videos are highly valued for their effectiveness in explaining a concept in a simple and understandable way. They are used in many areas for commercial, didactic, and educational purposes.

The module "History Moves: From Book to Screen" teaches the technical, artistic, and didactic basics of creating short films/explanatory videos.

The course takes place in cooperation with the seminar "The Bauhaus, Weimar and all the rest ...". This cooperation aims to research an event in the history of the university and from this develop a script with a storyboard for its visualization.

In the end, the short films/explanatory videos will be produced. During this process, the students are supervised by the teachers involved. The final stage is a presentation of all the produced films.

This course provides an opportunity to analyze how sexuality in all its forms (identity, sexual orientation, others) has been represented (or not) in visual history. The course places a focus on practice-based research, inviting students to develop their own visual projects in response to approaches from other disciplines such as literature, cultural geography and feminist studies.

"Googie Architecture," in the narrower sense, is a modernist architectural trend popular in California from the 1940s to 1960s which was used in the design of commercial architecture such as cafés, motels, or shops and was furthermore style-defining for this building type worldwide. Stylistic features are – next to the typical technology euphoria of the time in the form of futuristic appropriations of the space age – the gesamtkunstwerk-like combination of space, artifact, performance, and advertising graphics. Synonymous terms like "Populuxe" or "Doo Wop" describe experience spaces with a clear intended psychological effect.

Pop cultural phenomena are frequently used in artistic and design practices (Learning from Las Vegas, New Babylon, Fun Palace, Instant City, No Stop City) to establish their own positions. Today, the concept of "Googie" might be used to understand "Scripted Spaces" (Klein) and to develop ideas pointing beyond itself at the same time. Especially in the current situation of digital change and automation, experience-oriented design plays an increasingly critical role, shifting from the logistical idea of space to concepts such as serendipity, competing with logistics centers, and the Internet. In this way, the pop-cultural phenomena of “Googie Architecture” offers the opportunity to freely explore the ongoing theoretical and design discourse of public and semi-public spaces.

How could an embodied approach nourish and inform practices in Academia, Arts & Activism in a way that inspires social transformation?

During this Winter Semester, you are invited to collectively explore experimental body-based research infused with critical social theory. We explore ways of thinking-with; our bodies, spaces and material conditions reflecting Haraway’s notion of SF: Science Fiction, Speculative Fabulation, String Figures, Speculative Feminism, Science Fact, So Far (Haraway, 2016).

This intervention playfully questions dominant narratives of western rationality and individualism in order to explore alternative knowledge production beyond the construction of a cartesian body/mind dualism.

Drawing on critical posthuman theory and queer feminist epistemology, the course coalesces around topics of

In dem Projektmodul "Tanzbar – Animation, Raum und Musik“, geht es um die Produktion einer kollaborativen, analogen Animation in der Kunstform Stop-Motion.


Das Modul findet in Blöcken von Oktober bis Dezember statt. Es richtet sich an Studierende aus den Bereichen Kunst und Design, Architektur und Musik, die sich für Film/Animation und interdisziplinäres kreatives Arbeiten interessieren.


Es wird ein audiovisuelles Konzept für die räumlichen Darstellung der geplanten Animation entwickelt und umgesetzt. Im Rahmen eines Tanzworkshops entsteht ein Video, das als Referenz für die finale Animation dienen wird. Das Projekt bietet die Möglichkeit, die Kunstform der Stop-Motion-/Puppenanimation in direktem Kontakt mit allen produktionsabhängigen Arbeitsabläufen zu erfahren.

Im Blockseminar Hacking the city! fragen wir, wie Daten, Technologien und Algorithmen auf die Disziplinen der Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, auf Architektur oder Kunst, Medien oder Urbanistik einwirken. Konkret werden wir Ansätze partizipatorischer Digitalisierung kennenlernen, ausprobieren und selbst entwickeln. Wie können zum Beispiel Daten zur Wohnungsnot oder Auswirkungen der Klimakrise erhoben, verarbeitet und dargestellt werden? Wie können wir Virtual und Augmented Reality (VR/AR)-Anwendungen nutzen, um verlorenes Erbe virtuell wieder begehbar zu machen? Oder wie können wir anhand von Bewegungsbildern künstliche Intelligenzen trainieren, die komplett-computergenerierte Tanzchoreografien ausspucken? Das Ziel des Projekts ist es, in interdisziplinären Kleingruppen Ideen, Konzepte und Prototypen für digitale Anwendung zu entwickeln. Das Seminar wird an vier Terminen stattfinden und durch die Gastdozent*innen Lea Schorling und Paul Böttcher begleitet.

"Equity at Bauhaus" ist ein offenes Format zur Diskussion der dringlichen Fragen unserer Gegenwart: Wie können wir sorgsam und gerecht zusammenleben und zusammen lernen – in der Welt und in der Universität? Wie entwerfen, planen und gestalten wir Räume, Prozesse, Beziehungen und Wissen für den Planeten und das Überleben aller seiner Lebewesen? Participants in the 4-day workshop “Site-specific post-colonial practice” will learn and employ postcolonial views on real sites in order to develop a sensitive artistic practice. For this, we will introduce a research practice based on sites in Weimar and perform practical exercises as a seismograph of colonial structures.

Through the workshop, the dichotomies mapped as North and South, East and West, will shed light on the categories that differentiate, separate and make up the built and cultural environment. The leading questions are: How do we encounter colonialism in the public space? What function does it perform in our routines and perceptions of things and spaces? We will look at specific sites in Weimar that have historical ties to colonialism, as well as sites where new modes of imperialism and orientalism appear in trade, ecologies, design, labour inequality and hybridity in the city.

Besides site research and daily exercises, we will introduce theory texts to sharpen our sensitivity to traces and unseen forms of colonialism in the public space.

Site example 1- Supermarket: Students gain a new view of a very familiar place in the city through insights into trade relations, material histories, and the representation of products, diversity and exoticism in the grocery store. In a performance exercise, students will point to North-South, East-West relations inside a supermarket and show the everyday market of lifestyles and nutrition as a complex negotiation of imperialism, self-representation, and fantasy.

MERZ lives and how? MERZ uses the principle of transgressing boundaries, the abolition of artistic genres to create an expanded concept of art across all areas of design. At the beginning of the 20th century, Kurt Schwitters invented his MERZkunst in the spirit of Dada. Poems, texts, collages, assemblages, sculptures and, in particular, the cave-like buildings such as the MERZbau made Schwitters MERZ known. Through these, he spun his artist friendships and relationships intermedially and internationally. In the seminar "Contemporary MERZbau" we will test how intercultural ties between the origins of students from different universities can be combined with the artistic methods of MERZ art to create a three-dimensional sculpture. To do this, we collect and research our own environment and identity in the online section. With photos, drawings, objects, text particles..., we will exchange ideas in the auditorium and in the small groups. This material and knowledge flows into a concrete artistic exchange in the practical part. With plaster, wood... and the things, information and questions we have brought with us, we will build a MERZ sculpture together as a "Contemporay MERZbau" in Weimar.

Cyanotype is one of the first photographic techniques from the 19th century. After it lost its importance and almost fell into oblivion, since the 1960s more and more artists have been working with this versatile and inexpensive technique.This course gives a brief insight into the early history of photography and introduces different positions of contemporary artists who deal with this medium. In the practical part, students use this knowledge to develop their own concepts, realize their own projects and find their artistic expression in cyanotype, whether as a single sheet, series, book or performance.

Cities are (and will be) places of intense coexistence, close cohabitation and clash of cultural practices. People will keep moving to cities and living in cities in the future. Attracted by diverse urban offers and opportunities for pluralistic integration and at the same time individual development and everyday life in attractive surroundings, there are still quite a few who initially overlook the fact that a city’s density challenges its residents: it has to be endured and (maybe?) needs to be designed.

Getting in touch is key for the city’s story of success: only the concentrated and spatially close cooperation of different actors and processes, makes the creative melting pot bubble and a preferred living environment. And only through the overall integration of urban society the potential and opportunities of the urban environment for innovation, communication and differentiated lifestyles can be implemented.

But where and how do we get in touch? Are there specific spatial or programmatic settings which are particularly fruitful when it comes to the question of what can be drivers of living together in cities? Maybe even all across Europe or world wide? The kiosk, for instance?

A multimedia (photography + audio + video ) art project on a person or a place that gives the chance to explore a social issue such as migration, gender equality, cultural identity, etc.

The course will be divided into 2 parts: theory and practice. In the theoretical online sessions students will explore aspects of visual story telling. They will be introduced to photo-stories and audio-visual stories focused on environmental portraiture and audio testimonies. International and local students will learn interview techniques and how to create portrait series and develop them into experimental multimedia storytelling. Students will complete short assignments in preparation for the final production stage in Weimar.

Weimar was home to many creative people: Goethe, Liszt, Nietzsche and Gropius.

In this course we will take a closer look to the more private aspect of living and housing during their times.  We will explore different theories and the cultural history of living and housing in lectures, excursions and workshops.

The course will be held by experts on various fields of research related to Klassik Stiftung such as art history, philosophy, cultural studies and architecture. During the course, students will profit from their insights and in-depth knowledge on these various fields of research both in theory and while creating their own approach to the topic. 

The Klassik Stiftung Weimar comprises a unique ensemble of 27 cultural landmarks. Twelve sites are designated as World Heritages Sites by UNESCO, eleven of which belong to the “Classical Weimar” ensemble, and the Haus Am Horn as part of the “Bauhaus and its Sites in Weimar, Dessau and Bernau”. They will serve as on-site primary examples a for the course.

Open your ears. Widen your eyes. Right now, what do you hear? Can you describe the sound?  Learn how to expand your perception: listening, seeing and more.

This course invites you to attentive listening and seeing.

Getting to know Weimar with your ears and eyes. The course is a site-specific learning opportunity: the city of Weimar is our playground.

Field Work: We will visit various locations. Some are lively, some are quiet. e.g. City Center, Station, Cemetery, University Library, etc. We will make sound sketches - write down or make drawings of the sound you hear.

Audio visual Works: Make short video and sound recordings like a diary during the stay in Weimar, Also, take “sound pictures” - how can we take a picture of the sound?

Sound Performance: This course emphasizes, not only observing our environment, but also we can become a part of the sound landscape! Just with any sound objects, we would make sound performance and develop it to the group performances.

In the end of the Spring School, we will exhibit the results and present the sound performance.

The course aims to develop a spatial idea in groups where surface-awareness plays a crucial role in space. We attempt to explore the surface content through multiple aspects in a spatial composition context.

The workshop offers a general overview of and an introduction to the broad range of creative training as well as possible fields in which students may engage in the future. Students will be provided with a grounding in the interdisciplinary nature of the work of architects and designers with regard to space in current as well as future professional practice. Training in the flexibility of approaches and in spatial awareness will also be offered.

“Please include an abstract about your artistic practice!” But how do I write about my own artistic practice?

The request to include a text about your own artistic practice is common in proposals for stipends, artist residencies and exhibitions.

In six online meetings in January and February 2023 we will read artists’ manifestos, abstracts for open-calls, academic texts, press information, gallery texts and analyse artist presentations on Social Media, to obtain a theoretical and practical overview of various text forms in the artistic field.

Subsequently you focus on writing about your own art: What context is the text for? For whom do I write? What does the reader need to know about my work? Which terms do I use and need to explain? Which images do I include? Accompanied by personal online feedback (via E-Mail or BigBlueButton) in February and early March 2023 where we discuss your texts, before meeting in person.

In our one week Weimar Writing Retreat in March 2023 we work alone, in small groups and altogether on your texts. We analyse and optimize your text in an open creative atmosphere in various places in Weimar.

This workshop has a focus on the visual arts, but is open to Architects, Designers and all other disciplines.
