Exchange
The ECL-AA as framework for international student and staff exchange
Relevance, aims, and guiding principles
The cooperation with EiABC in Addis Ababa is of outstanding importance for the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. The connection between the two institutions has grown organically for over a decade. This was made possible by cooperation in a variety of areas: student exchanges, teacher mobility, joint externally funded research projects, workshops, and excursions. With the creation of the Emerging City Lab - Addis Ababa (ECL-AA), the cooperation gained a joint administrative structure - a certain sign of a partnership that is comprehensive and set up for the long term. Such a framework functions as a catalyst for the development and implementation of joint projects. The founding agreement states: "The ECL-AA shall offer a framework to enhance education in [...] interdisciplinary approaches and intercultural competencies." This reflects the two core elements of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar's self-understanding - interdisciplinarity and internationality and hence interculturality. This self-understanding is effective in practice: Four chairs of the EiABC and three institutes from two faculties of Bauhaus-Universität are involved in the IN³ project of the ECL-AA. The cooperation thereby provides an opportunity for innovative cooperation between different departments, including at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar itself. The joint activities between EiABC and Bauhaus-Universität Weimar demonstrate another salient feature: the interlinking of research and teaching. Students participate actively in research activities, and the results have a direct impact on teaching. The ECL-AA thus fulfils the valuable function of a living lab.
