The Masters programme »Advanced Urbanism« (M.Sc.) is offered as a joint dual-degree programme in cooperation of Bauhaus-Universität Weimar Faculty for Architecture and Urbanism with the College of Architecture and Urban Planning (CAUP) at Tongji University in Shanghai since the year 2004. As a programme of the master study course »Integrated Urban Development and Design« (IUDD) it focuses on the history, transformation, dissolution, restructuring and reinvention of the city. With this programme, both universities rise to the functional and aesthetic challenges urban spaces face due to the global transformation processes affecting cities everywhere.
We are currently restructuring our IUDD study course “Advanced Urbanism” (AdUrb) to a multi-partner programme for the third semester. It is currently only possible to apply for the IUDD study course “Reflective Urban Practice” (RUP). If you are also interested in IUDD – RUP as an alternative, this would be the first and only choice at the moment – and you should refer to in your application or motivation letter that you originally were interested in AdUrb. In case we will be able to offer the new cooperation model in the beginning of the new semester (October 2019) we will then be able to offer a shift to the partners cooperating in the new multi-partner master programme in the third semester.
This four-semester programme aims to train locally and internationally active experts for the urban realm. Developing spatial competences and skills required by today’s planning and design professions, comprehensive and interdisciplinary analyses of major issues in contemporary urban development are at the heart of this programme.
Advanced Urbanism offers an excellent education. The year you will spend at Tongji University in Shanghai will provide you with unique experiences. Students of our programe stand out: Being a dual programme, both the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar and the Tongji University Shanghai award successful graduates an independent Masters degree.
With the reaccreditation of the study programmes “European Urban Studies” and “Advanced Urbanism” the programmes have undergone important structural and content-wise changes: Since October 2018 the former study programme “European Urban Studies”, together with the internship of Model Projects has been strengthened towards practice and design and is offered as “Integrated Urban Development and Design” (IUDD) at the bauhaus.institute for experimental architecture (ifex) as well as the double degree study programme “Advanced Urbanism”. A study programme with stronger orientation to theory is offered at the Institute for European Urban Studies (IfEU) under the name “European Urban Studies”.
The Master's Programme »Advanced Urbanism« is a special programme of the study course »Integrated Urban Development and Design« (IUDD) and is operated in cooperation with the College for Architecture and Urban Planning (CAUP) at Tongji-University Shanghai since the year 2004. Numerous curricular and extracurricular activities offer a glimpse into the current discourse on urban issues in the respective country.
In 2014, both universities celebrated the 10 years of successful cooperation in the joint degree programme.
The study programme Advanced Urbanism is a special programme in the Master's course »Integrated Urban Development and Design« (IUDD) where we train students to develop abilities that will encourage them to react to transformation processes that are typical for the beginning of the 21st century: Urban landscapes of dispersed character, global markets as well as global challenges in environment and society, virtual spaces, powerful actors in the construction business and postmodern lifestyles are raising new challenges for the spatial competences of planners and designers dedicated to larger scales but with a sense for detail.
Our programme is committed to define, analyse, include and streamline these diverse factors in the sense of Integrated Urban Development as an holistic approach, linked to urban design in metropolitan and rural-urban contexts. Advanced Urbanism offers a specific notion of current trends of urban and rural-urban development in the Chinese context of growing urbanization next to other German or international urban development contexts.
