Das Institut für Europäische Urbanistik (IfEU) hat im Juli eine Kollegin von der University of California, San Diego, Dr. Kelema Moses, zu Gast. Mit der Expertin für Urbanistik und Stadtplanung organisiert das IfEU einige Veranstaltungen, zu denen Interessierte herzlich eingeladen sind.

Am Freitag, 15. Juli 2022, 16.00 Uhr, gibt Dr. Kelema Moses unter dem Titel »Architecture, Spatial Justice, and U.S. Colonialism in the Pacific« Einblicke in ihre aktuelle Forschung. Der Vortrag wird vom IfEU gemeinsam mit dem Bauhaus-Institut organisiert und ist Teil der diesjährigen summaery. Der englischsprachige Vortrag in der Bibliothekslounge befasst sich mit der Wohnbebauung in Kaka'ako, Hawai'i, einem Landgewinnungsprojekt auf aufgeschüttetem Land in der Nähe der relativ flachen Küstenlinie.

Kelema Lee Moses, Ph.D., ist Assistat Professor für Urbanistik und Planung an der University of California, San Diego. Sie hat an der Pennsylvania State University in Kunstgeschichte ihren Master und ihre Promotion absolviert. An der University of Virginia hat sie einen Bachelor in Kunstgeschichte und Politik abgeschlossen. Ihre Forschungsinteressen sind Architektur- und Stadtgeschichte; pazifische Inselstudien; indigene Zukünfte; Klimagerechtigkeit; Umweltwissenschaften; transnationale Mobilitäten; Kolonialismus; dekoloniale Theorie und Politik.

This July, the Institute for European Urban Studies (IfEU) is hosting a colleague from the University of California, San Diego, Dr. Kelema Moses. The IfEU is organising a number of events with the expert in urbanism and urban planning, which are open to the public.

On Friday, the 15th of July 2022 at 4pm, Dr. Kelema Moses will give insights into her current research about »Architecture, Spatial Justice, and U.S. Colonialism in the Pacific«. The presentation will take place in English. The event is organised together with the IfEU and part of this year's summaery.

Description of the lecture: Many architects and urban planners working in the Hawaiian Islands utilize U.S. building codes, zoning ordinances, and urban growth models to create spatial narratives of exposure and erasure on Native geographies. This presentation interrogates residential development in Kaka‘ako, Hawai‘i: a land reclamation project on filled land near the relatively flat shoreline. Development projects in the district offer a “live, work, play” environment for middle to high income earners. However, I suggest that mixed-use developments in the district create an architectural performance wherein design elements are reliant upon island and Native ecologies. In doing so, architecture functions to blur histories of U.S. colonialism in the Pacific and Native epistemes rooted in place, place-making, and well-being.

Kelema Lee Moses, Ph.D. is an assistant professor of urban studies and planning at the University of California, San Diego. Her teaching and research combine historical perspectives with discussions about critical contemporary issues related to the built environment of the United States and Oceania. She has published in several peer-reviewed journals including Ardeth, The Avery Review, Pacific Arts, and The Contemporary Pacific.
