Vier Jahre lang haben Nachwuchswissenschaftler*innen an der Bauhaus-Universität Weimar und an drei weiteren europäischen Hochschulen im Marie-Curie-Forschungsprojekt »urbanHIST – History of European Urbanism in the 20th Century« zur Geschichte einer europäischen Planung im 20. Jahrhundert geforscht. Ihre Forschungserkenntnisse zu Entwicklungen und zur Geschichte der europäischen Stadtplanung im 20. Jahrhundert vereint nun die englischsprachige Neuerscheinung »European Planning History in the 20th Century. A Continent of Urban Planning« im Print- und im Open-Access-Format.

Die Publikation richtet sich insbesondere an Studierende und Wissenschaftler*innen der Fachrichtungen Urbanistik, Stadtplanung, Raumplanung, Raumpolitik, Stadtentwicklung, Stadtpolitik, Planungsgeschichte und Europäische Geschichte des 20. Jahrhunderts.

Englisches Abstract der Publikation

The history of Europe in the 20th century is closely tied to the history of urban planning. Social and economic progress but also the brute treatment of people and nature throughout Europe were possible due to the use of urban planning and the other levels of spatial planning. Thereby, planning has constituted itself in Europe as an international subject. Since its emergence, through intense exchange but also competition, despite country differences, planning has developed as a European field of practice and scientific discipline. Planning is here much more than the addition of individual histories; however, historiography has treated this history very selective regarding geography and content.

This book searches for an understanding of the historiography of planning in a European dimension. Scholars from Eastern and Western, Southern and Northern Europe address the issues of the public led production of city and the social functions of urban planning in capitalist and state-socialist countries. The examined examples include Poland and USSR, Czech Republic and Slovakia, UK, Netherlands, Germany, France, Portugal and Spain, Italy, and Sweden.

Projekthintergrund

»UrbanHist« wurde von April 2017 bis März 2021 unter Federführung der Professur Raumplanung und Raumforschung an der Bauhaus-Universität Weimar getragen und in Kooperation mit der Universidad de Valladolid (Spanien), Univerzita Pavla Jozefa Šafárika v Košiciach (Slowakei) und die Blekinge Tekniska Högskola (Schweden) durchgeführt. Darüber hinaus waren 13 Partnerorganisationen aus dem akademischen und dem nichtakademischen Bereich beteiligt. Das Forschungsprojekt wurde gefördert durch das Programm European Joint Doctorates Horizon2020 MARIE SKŁODOWSKA-CURIE ACTIONS der Europäischen Kommission.
