Inwiefern sind das komplexe Wachstum der lateinamerikanischen Städte und die Produktion von von städtischem Raum in brasilianischen Metropolen miteinander verbunden? Wie beeinflussen soziale Ungleichheit und informelle Siedlungen den Zugang zu Wohnraum in Brasilien? Welche Rolle spielen staatliche Wohnungsprogramme wie bei der Bekämpfung der Wohnungsnot? Wie wirken sich Urbanisierung und Gentrifizierung auf die Wohnsituation in brasilianischen Metropolen aus?

Der Themenabend »The Brazilian Housing Question«, moderiert von der brasilianischen Austauschstudentin Bárbara Moreira de Andrade, stellt am 3. Februar 2025 die Perspektiven von drei brasilianischen Gastprofessor*innen vor und bringt diese miteinander ins Gespräch:

• Gerônimo Leitão: »Brazilian Context: Review and other ways to live«

Der Architekt Gerônimo Leitão ist Professor an der Fakultät für Architektur und Städtebau der Bundesuniversität Fluminense in Rio de Janeiro. Er arbeitete in den 80er und 90er Jahren für die Stadtverwaltung von Rio de Janeiro, das brasilianische Institut für Kommunalverwaltung und das Staatssekretariat für Wohnungs- und Bodenangelegenheiten, wo er als Direktor der Projektabteilung für die Entwicklung von Sozialwohnungsprojekten und die städtebauliche Regulierung informeller Siedlungen zuständig war.

• Rita Velloso: »Urban constellation: Critical Aspects of the production of space in Brasil«

Rita Velloso studierte Architektur und Philosophie. Sie ist außerordentliche Professorin an den Fakultäten für Architektur und Design der Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais sowie an der Päpstlichen Katholischen Universität von Minas Gerais. Sie forscht an mehreren Forschungseinrichtungen in Minas Gerais zu ihren Schwerpunkten in Architektur, Stadtplanung, Theorie der Stadt, Stadtgeschichte und Architekturtheorie.

• Renato Cymbalista: »Creating non-speculative property in Brazil«

Der promovierte Architekt und Urbanist Renato Cymbalista ist Professor für Stadtgeschichte und Geschichte des Urbanismus an der Fakultät für Architektur und Urbanismus der Universität von São Paulo (FAU-USP). Er war Gastprofessor an der Technischen Universität Cottbus, Deutschland, Paris 7 (Diderot), Paris 1 (Sorbonne-Pantheon) und Parsons-the New School of Design. Er ist Präsident der in São Paulo ansässigen Nichtregierungsorganisation »Instituto Pólis«.

Die Veranstaltung in englischer Sprache findet am Montag, 3. Februar um 18 Uhr im Institut für Europäische Urbanistik, IfEU, Belvederer Allee 5, Raum 007 statt. Zum Abschluss der Veranstaltung gibt es eine mit einer künstlerischen Darbietung des Musikers, Komponisten und Forschers Thiago Santos von der Franz-Liszt-Universität auf der 10-saitigen Mandoline.

The Institute of European Urban Studies invites you to a themed evening on the Brazilian housing issue in English on February 3, 6 to 8 pm.

To what extent are the complex growth of Latin American cities and the production of urban space in Brazilian metropolitan areas connected? How do social inequality and informal settlements influence access to housing in Brazil? What role do government housing programs play in combating the housing shortage? How do urbanization and gentrification affect the housing situation in Brazilian metropolises?

The themed evening “The Brazilian Housing Question”, moderated by Brazilian exchange student Bárbara Moreira de Andrade, will present the perspectives of three Brazilian guest professors on February 3, 2025 and bring them into conversation with each other:

• Gerônimo Leitão: »Brazilian Context: Review and other ways to live«

The architect Gerônimo Leitão is a professor at the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism at the Federal University of Fluminense in Rio de Janeiro. In the 1980s and 1990s, he worked for the Rio de Janeiro City Council, the Brazilian Institute of Local Government and the State Secretariat for Housing and Land, where he was Director of the Project Department responsible for the development of social housing projects and the urban regulation of informal settlements.

• Rita Velloso: »Urban constellation: Critical Aspects of the production of space in Brasil«

Rita Velloso studied architecture and philosophy. She is an associate professor at the Faculties of Architecture and Design of the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais and at the Pontifical Catholic University of Minas Gerais. She conducts research at several research institutions in Minas Gerais, specializing in architecture, urban planning, urban theory, urban history and architectural theory.

• Renato Cymbalista: »Creating non-speculative property in Brazil«

Renato Cymbalista, PhD in architecture and urbanism, is Professor of Urban History and History of Urbanism at the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism of the University of São Paulo (FAU-USP). He has been a visiting professor at the Technical University of Cottbus, Germany, Paris 7 (Diderot), Paris 1 (Sorbonne-Pantheon) and Parsons-the New School of Design. He is president of the São Paulo-based non-governmental organization “Instituto Pólis”.

The event in English will take place on Monday, February 3 at 6 pm at the Institute for European Urban Studies, IfEU, Belvederer Allee 5, Room 007. The event will conclude with an artistic performance on the 10-string mandolin by musician, composer and researcher Thiago Santos from the Franz Liszt University.
