In wieweit können informelle Siedlungen und Anbauten die Wahrnehmung und Wirkung historischer Anlagen beeinflussen? Ist es möglich, in die Bewertung urbaner Räume den illegalen Zustand anders als nur negativ zu berücksichtigen, ihm sogar einen eigenen Wert zuzuschreiben? Welche Erkenntnismöglichkeiten bieten uns solche Fälle an ägyptischen Beispielen einer Großstadt im Vergleich zu einer Kleinstadt?

Diesen Fragen widmen sich vier Universitäten: die Universität Kassel und die Bauhaus-Universität Weimar in Deutschland mit der TU Berlin Campus ElGouna und der Alexandria Universität in Ägypten. Im Rahmen der Kooperation „City, Community and Heritage“ organisieren die vier Hochschulen einen internationalen Studierenden-Workshop in Ägypten.  Wesentliche Ziele des Workshops sind die internationale Brückenbildung der interdisziplinären Zusammenarbeit von Studierenden der Lehrgebiete Denkmalpflege – Bauhaus Universität Weimar und Alexandria Universität – und der Urbanisierung und informellen Siedlungen – Universität Kassel und TU Berlin Campus ElGouna. Die Fragestellungen des Workshops werden in zwei Fallstudien durch Feldarbeiten in Ägypten aufgegriffen. Die erste Hälfte des Workshops wird in der Großstadt Alexandria am Mittelmeer stattfinden. Dabei wird eine historische Straßenbahn-Werkstätte mit ihrer dazugehörenden historischen Nachbarschaft untersucht. Die zweite Hälfte des Workshops findet in der Kleinstadt Al-Qusair am Roten Meer statt. Die Untersuchung bezieht sich auf dem historischen Stadtkern von Al-Qusair in Nachbarschaft eines historischen italienischen Phosphatbetriebs. Historisch wurden Alexandria und Al-Qusair ursprünglich als antike Hafenstädte gegründet; Alexandria als die erste ägyptische Hafenstadt am Mittelmeer und Al-Qusair die erste Hafenstadt am Roten Meer. Die beiden historischen urbanen Räumen sind mit derzeitige informellen Anpassungen durchsetzt. Die Erfahrungen und Ergebnisse der internationalen Studierenden, die aus diesem Workshop gewonnen werden, werden von Fachleuten durch Vorträge begleitet und unterstützt. Die Studenten sollten sich während des Workshops ein Thema suchen, worüber sie einen Essay schreiben können, der in einem gemeinsamen Handbuch gesammelt und veröffentlicht werden kann.

Der Workshop ist auf 3 Phasen hin angelegt:

1. Phase: Alexandria (1.-5. November)

Tag 1: Flug von Frankfurt nach Kairo.

Tag 2: Ankunft Kairo Flughafen um 2 Uhr morgens. Fahrt nach Alexandria. Hotel Check-in! Abends: Kick-off-Veranstaltung an der Universität Alexandria.

Tag 3: Stadtführung in Alexandria. Workshop Vorträge und Einführung zur Fallstudie.

Tag 4: Vor-Ort Besichtigung mit Datenerhebung/ Meetings mit Stakeholdern.

Tag 5: Gruppenarbeiten und Präsentationen.

1. Phase: Kairo (6. November)

Tag 6: Kurzreise nach Kairo. Besuch der Pyramiden und die umgegebenen informellen Siedlungen/ Al-Azhar-Park und Umgebung. Fahrt nach El-Gouna

1. Phase: El-Gouna. Al-Quseir (7.-11. November)

Tag 7: Kick-off-Veranstaltung in TU Berlin Campus El-Gouna und Einführung zur Situation in Al-Quseir mit Schwerpunkt auf ihrer Stadtmitte.  Entspannungsnachmittag am Roten Meer. Fahrt nach Al-Qusair.

Tag 8: Vor-Ort Besichtigung mit Datenerhebung/ Treffen mit Stakeholdern.

Tag 9: Gruppenarbeit und Vorbereitungen für die Präsentationsergebnisse.

Tag 10: Abschlusssitzung. Zusammenbringen der Forschungsrichtungen bzgl. des Fallbeispiels im Rahmen des Hauptthemas des Workshops.

Tag 11: Fahrt nach Kairo. Rückreise nach Deutschland.

Wichtige Anmerkungen zum Workshop

** Englisch sprechen ist eine Hauptvoraussetzung zur Teilnahme im Workshop.

** VOR dem Workshop werden 3 Vorträge (3.5 Stunden, 3.5 Stunden und 1.5 Stunde) mit einer thematischen und organisatorischen Einführung zum Workshop stattfinden. 2 Wochen NACH dem Workshop werden Essay-Abstracts abgegeben und präsentiert. Vor der finalen Essay-Abgabe werden Konsultationen geplant. Essays können auf Deutsch oder Englisch geschrieben.

**Die Bearbeitung der Aufgaben in Kooperation mit Studierenden der Partneruniversitäten wird empfohlen und unterstützt; dadurch können Studenten eine interdisziplinäre Analyse durchführen. Der Workshop schafft einen gemeinsamen Raum für die Studierenden, die sich für Stadtplanung, Architektur und Denkmalpflege interessieren.

**Es steht die Möglichkeit einer gemeinsamen Publikation mit den Partneruniversitäten.

Finanzierung des Workshops – Kostenplan

Im Rahmen der Kooperationen mit der Universität Alexandria und der TU Berlin, Campus El-Gouna, werden alle Seminarräume und Materialien in Alexandria und El-Gouna für die Arbeit von den Partnern kostenlos angeboten. Da die Teilnehmer ihre eigenen Laptops für die Arbeit mitbringen werden, sind keine sonstigen Kosten außer der Unterkunft und dem Transport im Kostenplan berechnet. To what extent do informal urbanizations and additions affect historical sites and buildings in Egypt? Which challenges and potentials could be highlighted in such contexts, where informal settlements and historical buildings are juxtaposed? And in such a case how far are their values projected and in turn, perceived?

These questions will be discussed by 4 universities: the University of Kassel and Bauhaus University Weimar in Germany with the TU Berlin Campus El-Gouna and Alexandria University in Egypt. As part of the City, Community and Heritage cooperation, the four universities are organizing an international workshop in Egypt. The main objectives of the workshop are the international bridging of the interdisciplinary cooperation of students of the faculties of conservation—Bauhaus University Weimar and Alexandria University—and urbanization and informal settlements—University of Kassel and TU Berlin Campus El-Gouna. The questions of the workshop will be investigated through fieldwork in 2 case studies in Egypt. The first half of the workshop will take place in the city of Alexandria by the Mediterranean, where a historical Tram workstation with its associated historical neighborhood is examined. The second half of the workshop is located in the small town of Al-Qusair by the Red Sea. The exploration will take place in the historical city center of Al-Qusair that takes place alongside the historical Italian phosphate company. Both cities of Alexandria and Al-Qusair were originally founded as ancient port cities; Alexandria as the first Egyptian port city by the Mediterranean and Al-Qusair by the Red Sea. The two historical urban spaces are currently affected by disregards and informal additions.

Students will get the chance to meet colleagues from various cultural and study backgrounds and will work under the supervision of a highly qualified team from the four universities and experts in Egypt. The experiences and results of the international students gained from this workshop will be accompanied and supported by lecturers. During the workshop, students should look for a topic on which they can write an essay that can ultimately be collected and published in a common Handout.

The workshop consists of 3 phases:

Day 1: Flight from Frankfurt Airport to Cairo.

Day 2: Arrival in Cairo at 2:30 am. Trip to Alexandria & Hotel Check-in! Evening: Kick-off-Event by Alexandria University.

Day 3: Walking tour in Alexandria. Workshop lectures and introduction to case study.

Day 4: Site-Visit and data collection/ Meetings with stakeholders.

Day 5: Group work and presentations.

1. Phase: Cairo (6. November)

Day 6: Day trip to Cairo to visit the pyramids and their surrounding informal settlements/ Al-Azhar-Park and surroundings. Trip to El-Gouna. Late Check in El-Gouna!

1. Phase: El Gouna/ Al-Quseir (7.-11. November)

Day 7: Kick-off-Event in TU Berlin Campus El-Gouna with an introduction about Al-Quseir with a focus of its city center.  Socializing and Recreation. Trip to Al-Qusair.

Day 8: Site-Visit and data collection/ Meetings with stakeholders.

Day 9: Group work and Final presentations.

Day 10: Wrap-Up Meeting. Collect the research directions regarding BOTH case studies in the main theme of the workshop. Determine preliminary essay topics.

Day 11: Trip to Cairo. Flight to Germany.

Important remarks regarding the workshop

** The English language is an important requirement to participate in the workshop.

** BEFORE the workshop, 3 presentations will take place with a thematic and organizational introduction. Two weeks AFTER the workshop, students will submit and present their essay abstract. Consultations will take place before the final essay submission, in English or German.

** Cooperative essays between the Bauhaus students and participants from the other partner universities are recommended and supported; this allows students to work in an interdisciplinary method. The workshop creates a common space for students interested in urban planning, architecture and heritage preservation.

** There lies a possibility for a joint publication between the partner universities.

Financing the workshop – cost plan

As part of the cooperation with the University of Alexandria and the TU Berlin Campus El-Gouna, all rooms and materials in Alexandria and El-Gouna for the workshop are offered free of charge. As the participants will bring their own laptops for work, there are no other costs besides the accommodation and the transportation in the cost plan.
