Architecture as a communicative tool

The present work makes an advantage of the famous slogan “form follows function” Sullivan (1896), the aim of this work is to manipulate the dialogue between the forms and functions of architectural components on the one hand and people on the other.

This manipulation can act as a tool to present special behaviors of people or other data from inside the building as well as changing their behavior.

Different shopping plazas have been analyzed, in order to understand the problems which already exist there because of architectural designs. The result of these analyses will be used as the input of another shopping plaza that can automatically detect these problems and solve them. For this purpose, Internet of things (IoT) concept and new media technologies have been used to redefine the architectural components, which can communicate with people in a new sense by the help of kinetic and light weighted structures that can change the atmosphere of the space as well as changing behavior of people by communicating with them.

The methodology of the present work consists of analyzing the behavior of people by understanding the paths people go through in shopping plazas, their interests as well as detecting the common problems which already exists in shopping plazas. By understanding the behavior of people and different architectural theories, redefining and designing of architectural components that are able to change the behavior of people by communicating with them will be started.

The result of the present work is a new usage for architecture that can work as an active, powerful and influential source of inspiration and act as a media and make people aware about what happens around them. It can also open ways thinking for designing public buildings in some different styles of architectural design that can change the behavior of people. The integration of internet of things concept with MediaArchitectural spaces, can also facilitate the analyzing and predicting the behavior of crowd in public spaces, which can be lead to design an active public space. Any study in this respect would be a step forward not only in the field of architecture and urban planning but also crowd dynamics, behavioral sciences and human-computer interaction(Hespanhol & Tomitsch, 2014)
