In Leipzig gibt es noch einige Flächenreserven, aber keine Brache ist so groß wie das Karl-Krause-Gelände im Leipziger Osten. Die alte Maschinenfabrik ist schon lange weg, das Druckmaschinenwerk VEB Polygraph ist auch schon länger verschwunden. Seitdem wächst ein kleiner Wald auf dem Gelände, es gibt Geröll und Gebüsch und die typische Ruderal-Romantik verlassener Orte.
Neben der großen Freiheit der überwucherten Fläche gibt es zwei weitere Attraktionen: Den „Parkbogen Ost“, eine ehemalige Bahntrasse, die das Gebiet direkt mit dem Leipziger Hauptbahnhof verbindet und zu einem Radweg ausgebaut werden soll, und eine grüne Fuß- und Radverbindung, die über den länglichen Lene-Voigt-Platz in zehn Minuten bis zum Grassi-Museum führt, also bis in die Innenstadt, zum Augustusplatz und zur Universität.
Die gute Erschließung, ergänzt durch einen nahen S-Bahnhof, qualifiziert das Gebiet für einen Städtebau der Neuen Mobilität. Populäre Stichworte wie 5-Minuten-Stadt, Produktive Stadt oder Schwammstadt können hier eine Rolle spielen, ebenso aber auch völlig freie Konzepte, die sich auf die besondere Atmosphäre des Ortes beziehen.
Der Entwurf verbindet sich mit einer mehrtägigen Exkursion, bei der neben dem Projektgebiet auch Leipzig als „Schwarmstadt“, als begehrter Wohnort und wachsende Großstadt im Mittelpunkt stehen wird.
There are still some vacant plots in Leipzig, but no wasteland is as large as the Karl Krause site in Leipzig's east. The old machine factory is long gone, the VEB Polygraph printing machine factory has also long since disappeared. Since then, a small forest has grown on the site, there are rubble and bushes and the typical ruderal romanticism of abandoned places.
Besides the openess of the overgrown area, there are two other attractions: The "Parkbogen Ost", a former railway line that connects the area directly to Leipzig's main railway station, now being developed into a cycle path, and a green foot and cycle path that leads wtihin ten minutes along the Lene-Voigt-Platz to the Grassi Museum and directly to the city centre, to Augustusplatz and the university.
The good accessibility, complemented by a nearby S-Bahn station, qualifies the area as a testbed for new urban mobility. Popular keywords such as 5-minute city, productive city or sponge city can play a role here, as well as completely free concepts that relate to the special atmosphere of the location.
The design is combined with a three-day-excursion, which will focus not only on the project area but also on Leipzig as a "swarm city", a cool place to be and a growing metropolis.
