The water edge of Stralsund is interrupted by an industrial area and is inaccessible to the population. The coastal city will have to deal with floods more and more often due to the consequences of climate change. These problems are to be solved by the design „the connective Stralsund“. The existing water edge is translated into a setback string that hugs the buildings worth preserving. In this way, the string, which protects against flooding, divides the coastal section into high density and low density areas. This results in five high density areas with different characters, which are defined by anchor points. These areas are densified to create an added value for the whole population. The low density area allows for the natural development of green spaces and public recreation space. The string plays a major role in the vibrancy of the open spaces by transforming into an amphitheater, for example. The low density area as a buffer zone and the protective string can prevent the city from flood waters.
This concept is supposed to make the city of Stralsund sustainable for the future.
