Das Medium, das sichtbar macht – so bezeichnete Aristoteles einst das Diaphane (to diaphanês, das Durchscheinende). Die Ausstellung diaphanous | diaphan von Ji Young Yoon überträgt diese Idee in eine künstlerische Installation. Besucher*innen werden zu Akteuren, ihre körperliche Präsenz und ihre sensitiven Erfahrungen vervollständigen die Licht- und Klanginstallation. Die Grenzen des Raumes lösen sich auf, die Bestimmtheit der Architektur verschwindet, eine neue Räumlichkeit wird wahrnehmbar.

Ausgangspunkt der performativen Installation diaphanous | diaphan ist das Buch »Das Diaphane. Architektur und ihre Bildlichkeit«, herausgegeben von Ulrike Kuch, Wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin an der Professur Theorie und Geschichte der modernen Architektur der Fakultät Architektur und Urbanistik. Der 2020 im transcript Verlag erschienene Band umfasst Aufsätze von Wissenschaftler*innen und Künstler*innen unterschiedlichster Disziplinen, die das Diaphane und seine Beziehung zur Architektur beleuchten.

Aristotle called a medium that makes visible diaphanous (to diaphanês, diaphainein, to show through). The exhibition diaphanous | diaphan by Jiyoung Yoon transfers this idea into an artistic installation. Visitors are actors whose bodily presence and sensitive experiences complete the light and sound installation. Limits of space dissolve, the certainty of architecture dissappears, a new spatiality can be experienced.

Starting point for the performative installation diaphanous | diaphan is the book “Das Diaphane. Architektur und ihre Bildlichkeit” (The Diaphane. Architecture and its imageness) edited by Ulrike Kuch, research associate at the chair of Theory and History of modern Architecture, Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism. The book that was published in 2020 by transcript includes articles by scholars and artists from various disciplines, who shed a light on the diaphane and its relation to architecture.
