American Film artist David Lynch, born in 1946, has become legendary within his lifetime. He is one of the few film directors who have managed to excelin both the experimental side of the film d’auteur (e.g. eraserhead) and the hollywood feature (such as Blue Velvet or The Straight Story), not to mention his mystery television serial Twin Peaks, which inspired a new genre.

Lynch’s unique status within the film world necessitates a closer scrutiny of his work in terms of the developments in forms of media and notions of aesthetics at the turn of the 21st century. This is the first academic conference in Europe dealing with the complex intermedial influences and aesthetic elements taken from other artistic genres in David Lynch’s film oeuvre, and to tackle issues surrounding the political dimensions of his work. The conference will focus on psychoanalysis, intermediality, genre composition and interart, featuring renowned international researchers and academics from a variety of fields.
