The Department of Visual Communication at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar is pleased to announce the new online home of its Graphic Design Division.
Named after our patron saint Herbert Bayer, Herbert.gd compiles a selection of projects that pursue the ideas of the traditional Bauhaus movement – ideas that continue to guide us in everything we do: We are eager to experiment, open to various modes of creativity, and keen to maintain close links to industrial practice. Our approach is analytic, constructive, and innovative. Concerned with design projects that combine social relevance with cultural resonance and environmentalism, we aspire to new challenges and opportunities in creative production. We believe in the power of abstract composition and foster experimental methods. Since 2013, our in-house lab, the “Space for Visual Research” (SfVR), serves as a platform for experimental image production and encourages graphic designers to explore alternative modes of making that expand their creative repertoire.
Our new website documents a selection of experiments conducted at the Space for Visual Research alongside other activities and assignments, including a series of workshops that took place throughout 2017-2019, the year that marked the historic Bauhaus school’s 100th anniversary. Under the banner “Manifest of Practice”, these extracurricular events were realized at the Asociación Humboldt, Quito/Ecuador, at Taiwan Tech, Taipei/Taiwan, at whatreallymatters, Seoul/Korea, at Chiu Yeng Culture, Macao/China, at Universidad Católica Boliviana "San Pablo", La Paz/Bolivia, at the Gwangju Design Biennale 2019, Gwangju/Korea, at Safavi House, Isfahan/Iran, at the Paju Institute of Typography, Paju/Korea, at the Phoenix Design Summer, Hangzhou/China, at the Hubei University of Technology, Wuhan/China.
Herbert.gd is published by the professorship of the department, represented by Prof. Markus Weisbeck and Adrian Palko. Design and coding by Moritz Ebeling.
