Dr. Frøy Birte Bjørneseth is an associate professor at the Norwegian University of Science and technology (NTNU) in Ålesund and a principal engineer in human factors and control centres in Rolls-Royce Marine recently acquired by Kongsberg Maritime. She lectures on human factors and industrial psychology. At Kongsberg Maritime, she worked for the past 10 years in product development for ship bridge environment and engine control rooms. She is a specialist for human-machine interaction and human factors within the maritime domain, with special focus on holistic design thinking.
»Modern sea vessels are controlled with advanced automation systems. This has led to increasingly complex user interfaces for the control crew. Operators typically interact with several systems, often with different interface styles, all at the same time. This can cause cognitive overload. Equipment often is poorly placed and not ergonomic. This talk illustrates how following a user-centred design process combined with design thinking made a difference in designing a novel, unified ship bridge environment. Users were involved from ideation throughout product development. The holistic design includes rearranged novel consoles, input devices and software interfaces, to support design criteria of safety, simplicity, performance and proximity.«
