Have you ever wondered what possibilities there are to overcome the ongoing and increasing socio-ecological crisis we are facing?

Today, issues like social and climate justice are rising which makes it necessary to fundamentally question the prevailing growth-oriented development model. At the same time, many (not only) european societies are increasingly experiencing a crisis of democracy. Right-wing authoritarian movements and parties are criticizing democratic institutions. On the other hand, there are social movements that connect the need for justice with the need for more democracy and participation. In this context, municipalist movements are especially notable because they use different strategies, both within and outside of government, to improve cities and institutions for the benefit of everyone. In 2021, the municipalist movement “Zagreb is Ours!” achieved electoral success and won the mayoral position in Zagreb.

During our seminar, we dedicated our attention to the municipalist movement in Zagreb, examined the successes, difficulties and surprises of the first two years of a municipalist local government and the assosuated change in the understanding of local politics and urban planning. We had the opportunity to visit Zagreb for a two-week field trip, where we extensively studied the movement and conducted research on various related topics. We are presenting the findings and outcomes of our research.
