Natural Hazards and Risks in Structural Engineering (Master), gefördert von Drees & Sommer Leipzig
Why are you researching or studying at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar?
The high frequency of natural catastrophes in Brazil, especially in my birth state, summed with many poorly developed and conceived structures, made me set a career goal of help to insert good quality engineering and consequently more safety in people’s everyday life. The tremendous responsibility of being such a professional requires unstoppable studies and the highest level of technical knowledge that only specialization courses such as a master can provide. Due to the lack of specialization courses in such an area in my country, I decided to look for master courses abroad, being accepted at Bauhaus Universität-Weimar. The great relation between my career goals and the NHRE course made my move to Germany essential and very well suited to help me achieve my plans.
What is special about your project? Why is it relevant?
During my master's program, I have been involved in several activities, from research projects to teaching activities, and lately in a project offered in partnership between Stanford University and Bauhaus-Universität Weimar.
What characterises your voluntary commitment in Weimar?
I have been involved in research projects, teaching tutorials for the NHRE master's program, and the AEC Global Teamwork, a project offered by Stanford University, where I represented Bauhaus University as a Structural Engineer. The AEC Global Teamwork is a project-based learning course involving several globally distributed students, which took place from January to May this year, led by the great mentor Renate Fruchter. Representing Bauhaus-Universität Weimar as a structural engineer, I was part of the fantastic multi-disciplinary Island team 2022, composed of two other structural engineers, construction managers, an architect, and an MEP engineer, in which we designed a university building in the city of San Juan, Puerto Rico. To end with a flourish, we were awarded one of the three challenges proposed this year, the DPR Construction Challenge "Building as a Digital Twin Product (DTP) in support of Industrialized Construction & Operation & Maintenance (COM)". The attached pictures show the Island Team 2022 being awarded at Stanford University this year, event which I also took part, as well as some pictures of the designed building.
In case you have interest, you can check our project (Island Team 2022) at the AEC Global Teamwork 2022, offered by Stanford University and the IKI institute from Bauhaus-Universität Weimar.
