1. University library rates 2023 favourably in numbers

The number of visitors to the University Library increased in 2023. In view of the extensive lifting of pandemic restrictions, the number of library visits had already increased significantly in 2022 to 112,095. In 2023, this figure rose to 134,791 - an increase of 20 percent compared to the previous year.
Significant growth rates were also recorded for access to electronic media. For example, the number of full advertisements of magazine articles rose by 36% to 68,783 in 2023 compared to the previous year. The number of full displays of individual digital documents, i.e. generally e-books, also increased compared to the previous year.
Please feel free to browse the Bauhaus.Journal Online for numbers from the university library’s annual statistic for 2023 as well as interpretations and visible trends.

2. LinkedIn Learning – more than 20.000 online-courses available for members of the Bauhaus-University

We are excited to offer a brand-new interdisciplinary service for knowledge acquisition and further education: LinkedIn Learning. The courses focus primarily on business, creativity and technology. LinkedIn Learning gives users the opportunity to complete entire courses or to watch individual videos. Participants can receive certificates for each course they complete.
Access and use are easy: Users can register directly on the LinkedIn Learning homepage. University members need to register using their university e-mail address. Users will then be redirected to the university login through the Shibboleth service. Alternatively, you can also find the individual videos directly in Bibsearch. The hit display takes you directly to LinkedIn Learning and, after successful Shibboleth login, you can play the video without having to search again.
Further information can be found in Bauhaus.Journal Online.

3. New Database available: »Filmdienst«

Since March 2024, the University Library offers campus-wide access to the »Filmdienst« database (Publisher: Deutsche Zeitung/Munzinger).
The database documents all cinema films that have been shown in Germany since 1948 and critically appraised in the renowned magazine FILMDIENST. Numerous links connect the unique collection of over 34,600 film reviews with the »MUNZINGER Biographies« and thus offer a quick and in-depth insight into the life and work of actors, directors, producers and authors.

Following an increase in bird collisions in the past, bird protection markings have now been applied to selected glass surfaces at the University Library. The aim of these markings is to continue to guarantee the natural lighting of the building and to reconcile this with the protection of native birdlife.

6. »Strengthening democracy« as research topic for Weimar pupils

For around 450 tenth graders in the upper secondary school, the educational project »Wissen erobern. Schüler*innen entdecken die Weimarer Bibliotheken« (Conquering knowledge. Pupils discover the Weimar libraries) everything revolved around the topic of »Strengthening democracy«. At the kick-off event, Dr. Simon Frisch, Vice President for Teaching and Learning, and Dr. Ulrike Kuch, Vice President for Social Transformation at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, provided information about the requirements of university studies. The students then learned how to conduct research based on the fictitious topic »Strengthening democracy«. After being introduced to the wide range of services offered by Weimar's libraries, the students tried out research techniques at various stations in the university library and the city library, which they can incorporated into their own first academic paper.
»Wissen erobern« has been a fixture of the cooperative collaboration between secondary schools, Weimar libraries and the Central Thuringia Education Authority for 18 years.
