Newsletter 09.2020
1. Guest users able to borrow books and DVDs again
When the university library – after having to close to the public for five weeks – reenabled borrowing and returning items on April 24th 2020, we were unable to extend this service beyond university members. We’re happy to announce that since June 2nd 2020 our guest users, too, may take advantage of our still limited service. You may request books and DVDs from the closed and open stacks in the online catalogue (OPAC) and the discovery system BibSearch. Requested items will be held for pickup at the circulation desk from the following day and for five days beyond. As before, you may renew items up to 10 times.
Please note that starting on April 1st 2020 any university fees or fines may only be paid cashless with thoska credit.
2. DEAL contract with Springer Nature
After entering the DEAL contract with scientific publishing house Wiley in 2019, this spring Bauhaus-Universität Weimar has also entered the DEAL contract with Springer Nature. During the contract’s runtime of three years (until 2022), members of Bauhaus-Universität Weimar will gain unlimited access to Springer’s more than 1,900 journals on the publisher’s platform SpringerLink. In addition, articles by university researchers in these journals will now simultaneously be published online for free in accordance with Open Access. The articles will also be available via OPUS Weimar. APC list prices for publication in Springer Nature’s around 600 Gold Open Access journals will be reduced by 20 percent starting from August 1st 2020.
DEAL aims to seal countrywide contracts over the complete range of electronic journals by large scientific publishers. The financial burden is to be eased on participating scientific institutions, and access to scientific literature for research is supposed to be improved widely and sustainably through implementation of an Open Access component. You may download a complete and continually updated list of Springer Nature journals that are part of the deal here.
Detailed information on the Springer Nature publishing house is available on DEAL‘s website.
Please feel free to direct any questions to our Open Access appointee, Ms. Dana Horch, at dana.horch@uni-weimar.de
3. AVA – access to quality films
Thanks to a newly signed consortial agreement university members may now access a streaming service offered by German company AVA that covers a unique selection of European and international arthouse films. AVA collaborates with European film festivals to add quality productions, documentaries and short films to their catalogue. You may gain access from within the university network, or from outside it through a VPN connection.
The university library is currently evaluating different streaming services‘ offers. For example, due to an incalculable cost model we decided against an offer made by kanopy. However, in addition to AVA we expect to be able to provide access to filmfriend starting on July 1st 2020. We will keep you posted in our newsletter.
4. Onestar Press artist’s books online
The Metropolitan Museum’s Thomas J. Watson Library offers free access to digital copies of all artist’s books published by Onestar Press since 2000. No registration is required.
5. Inter-library loan news
One by one, inter-library loan services including requests of printed books are being reactivated. As emergency operations under special circumstances end on May 31st 2020, from June inter-library loan requests will no longer be free of charge. Please remember to charge credits to your inter-library loan account before you send a request. At the moment, you’ll be able to pay for credits using your thoska credit only. If you have insufficient credit on your thoska, you will be able to have the debt entered into your account and pay it off once the credit and thoska validation terminals are operational and accessible again. Please talk to our library staff at the circulation desk.
We greatly regret that the interim agreement with VG Wort could not be extended. Therefore, copies of journal articles requested by university members by inter-library loan will again need to be distributed as printed copies starting on June 1st 2020.
6. »Open your mind« - Invitation to the 6th Long Night of Academic Writing
The 6th Long Night of Academic Writing will take place online this year and revolve around current challenges to academic publishing. Where will the Open Science movement lead? How can scientific results be communicated to the public? What are the current trends in universities‘ writing consultations? Under the tagline »Open your mind!«, the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar invites students, doctoral candidates, university staff and anyone else interested in writing to this year’s event on Thursday, June 4th 2020. From 6pm to 12pm guests will be able to follow a varied schedule: live streams, webinars, chats and virtual guided tours. You can find detailed information about the program and descriptions of some highlights in this Bauhaus Journal entry as well as on the event website.
