1. Alumni Talk № 29 with Jörg Brauns now online

An interview with Dr. Jörg Brauns, the current director of the Berlin-Brandenburgische Akademie der Wissenschaften in Berlin and former student at the Hochschule für Architektur und Bauwesen (HAB) in Weimar revolves around how the atmosphere at the HAB changed in the late 80s, how the general social upheaval was reflected at the university and how the university was reorganized in the following years.
Jörg Brauns studied architecture at the HAB from 1986 until 1991. During the Peaceful Revolution era he served as a student representative in various self-governance councils. From autumn 1991 on he was a research fellow at the archutecture faculty.
This talk with library director Dr. Frank Simon-Ritz shows that Brauns belonged to those actors of the era that stood firmly on the side of change.
The talk with Dr. Jörg Brauns continues the series of talks on the university’s history curated by the alumni office in cooperation with the university archive and the university library.

2. Two new publications co-funded by Open Access publication fund

The Open Access book »Der Erfahrung auf der Spur. Auflösungsprozesse und Konstruktionen in Dokumentarfilmen von Sergei Loznitsa und Aleksandr Rastorguev« by artist and director Jelena Jeremejewa was recently co-funded by the Open Access publication fund at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. The book, which saw Jeremejewa gain her doctorate from the Art and Design faculty, was published by Neofelis and provides a practical approach to Sergei Loznitsa and Aleksandr Rastorguev’s documentaries. Their films do not represent the reality they show, but interpret it instead. This way, documentary becomes a design method, able to show blind spots in society, repressed and forgotten things.

The Open Access book »SOS: Medien des Überlebens. Die existenzielle Bedeutung von Lebenszeichen in Notfällen« by Martin Siegler, research fellow at the chair of media philosophy at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, was also recently co-funded. Siegler gained his doctorate with a thesis on signs of life in emergencies and catastrophes, which has now been published by De Gruyter in Open Access. In his book he explores the idea of the „sign of life“ from the perspective of media culture studies, sign theory and existential philosophy. By example of many catastrophic scenarios such as earthquakes, avalanches and mining accidents the book shows why humans in distress depend on media and means of communication on an existential level: no signs of life without signal torches, tracking devices, satellites or infrared sensors.
Publication was co-financed by the state of Thuringia’s Open Access support program. The book is freely available online under CC-BY license on the publisher's website as well as in OPUS Weimar.
The Open Access publication fund at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar has enabled co-financing the publication of Open Access monographs since 2019. Please consult our website for funding criteria and how to apply.

3. Work more comfortably at the library’s book scanners

A new adjustable desk for the large format scanner in the library main building, near the carrels, now enables you to work at a comfortable height. We hope to make using the high-powered scanner even more appealing than free scans, up to 600 dpi scan resolution and OCR capability already do. Try it for yourself!

4. »Baupreise.de PRO« – calculation handbook by SirAdos

»Baupreise.de« is an information database for everyone who deals with construction budgeting. Our new license allows university members to comfortably use Baupreise.de PRO from within the university network.

5. Library closed on two days in September 2023

The library will be closed on September 18th during the annual safety check on the building as well as on September 20th due to a state holiday (Children’s Day).
Please note that the building will be closed entirely on those days, and neither the book drop nor the copiers and charging terminals in the entrance area will be available.
