Am 5. und 6. Dezember 2019 hat die Professur für Sozialwissenschaftliche Stadtforschung der Bauhaus-Universität Weimar eine zweisprachige Konferenz unter dem Titel “Humanitäre Stadt, solidarisches Land? Strategien der Geflüchteteninklusion neu denken” ausgerichtet. Hier geht es zum Konferenzrückblick.

Workers, Football, Neighbourhood: Schalke between Tradition and Re-Invention

In 2018, the last coal mine in the Ruhr area closed. This transition away from historical industries, which once enriched both the region and the state has created structural instability. The former working class neighbourhoods require re-evaluation in their current state. Stakeholders of Schalke are ambitious and in need of renewed development in social and cultural activities which will unify the community. Sport and the predominance of the Schalke 04 football club is for this reason worth investigation.
Schalke FC was formed and grown amongst the working class of Gelsenkirchen. From the coal mines to the international stage, the prominence of the football corporation has transcended the original grounds and neighbourhood of Schalke-Nord. The neighbourhood currently exhibits the highest rates of child poverty in Germany and an overall life quality judged as the lowest among 401 evaluated cities in the country.
Having undertaken an exploratory phase which included interviews, tours, observation and academic research, the group identified four (4) key topics. The topics consider urban mobility, public spaces, means for invigorating employment opportunities, and the contribution of football to local identity in the historically rich central neighbourhood of Schalke. The intention behind the research is a multi-faceted and collaborative effort, which will create both enriched understanding of the current conditions and of the potential opportunities.

Postwachstumsstadt-Konferenz

Unter dem Titel Postwachstumsstadt. Perspektiven des sozial-ökologischen Wandels der Stadtgesellschaft fand am 10. und 11. Mai 2019 eine Konferenz an der Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, organisiert von der Professur Sozialwissenschaftliche Stadtforschung, statt. Hier geht es zum Konferenzrückblick.

Sozialraumanalyse (2014-2015)

Das Ziel der Werkstatt Sozialraum Thüringen war es, ein innovatives freies Angebot für Studierende aller Studienrichtungen und Semester zu schaffen, um sich in Kooperation mit kommunalen Akteuren mit lokalen Problemlagen und Fragen zum Sozialraum Thüringens auseinanderzusetzen.

Urban Minorities (2012-2014)

Städte waren schon immer Orte des Aufeinandertreffens und des Austauschs. Auffällige Unterschiede und wahrnehmbare Fremdheit konnten nicht immer in einem harmonischen Miteinander aufgelöst werden, sondern führten nicht selten zu einem angespannten Nebeneinander und nicht zuletzt auch immer wieder zu mit mehr oder weniger Gewalt ausgetragenen Konflikten. Nichtdestotrotz wurden an solchen Orten Kulturtechniken des Umgangs miteinander und der Auseinandersetzung mit Vielfalt entwickelt, eingeübt und weiterentwickelt. Minderheiten spielten in diesen Prozessen die tragende Rolle, was für uns den Ausgangspunkt für die Beschäftigung mit "Städtischen Minderheiten" und deren Alltagswelt in deutschen und islamisch geprägten Städten bildet. Beteiligte Universitäten des Projekts Urban Minorities waren die Universität Alexandria, die Islamische Universität Gaza, die German Jordanian University Amman sowie die American University Beirut.

Understanding and Designing the Post-Industrial City: metropolis, urban renewal and public space

Some of East-German and Portuguese cities have been experiencing rapid changes in the run of processes that can be marked as "post-industrialism". Although Portugal has been deeply formed as an peripherical country, urban planning of the Lisbon city and other cities has been realized in the 20th century in the run of industrial needs.

Computer-based methods for a socially sustainable urban and regional planning

Global restructuring and urbanisation presents a great challenge for urban and regional planning and highlights a pressing need for sustainable planning strategies. Current sustainable strategies focus on development concepts such as re-densification, mixed use approaches and polycentrality, which are primarily the result of economic and ecological considerations.

MediaCity (2005-2009)

Für einen Gesamtzeitraum von vier Jahren (2005-2009) war das Forschungsprojekt MEDIACITY an der Bauhaus-Universität Weimar unter Leitung von Frank Eckardt und Jens Geelhaar etabliert. Das Projekt untersuchte, in welcher Weise die sich ständig weiter entwickelnden Medien der Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologien neue Möglichkeiten der räumlich orientierten Nutzung eröffnen.

Future Urban Research in Europe (FUTURE, 2005-2008)

Vier Jahre lang wurde FUTURE von der Europäischen Kommission im Rahmen des Marie-Curie-Programms mit insgesamt 450.000 Euro gefördert. Umgesetzt wurde das Projekt von fünf europäischen Universitäten, die Gesamtkoordination lag bei Frank Eckardt.
