The rapid expansion of universities in North Rhine-Westphalia in the 1960s and 1970s triggered a boom in the architecture industry. The demands for democratization and regionalization of university education were to be followed by universities of a "new type", which on the one hand met the needs of the urgently needed junior academics and on the other hand were to meet the diverse demands - for example of a didactic, urbanistic, sociological nature. Of course, the buildings had to be built as cheaply and quickly as possible.
But how do you implement, for example, the desire for interdisciplinarity? The answers that some of the highly respected architects put forward were very heterogeneous. Common to the designs, however, was the belief in a fundamental plan of an optimized university sociotope, which should be taken into account through the scientification of the planning process. One of the best examples of the Zeitgeist of planning is the Ruhr-Universität in Bochum, which will be the focus of the lecture.
