Since 2014, there has been a cooperation between the Professorship »Experimental Radio« at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar and the Leipziger Hörspielsommer e.V. Together, they organise the »Hörspielmanuskriptwettbewerb«, which runs for two years.
In the first year of the competition, young authors are sought: those plays that win in the category »Best Manuscript« go into production in the second year. They will be realised by young radio play directors from the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar and a partner university. The results will be presented at the Hörspielsommer and have a chance of winning an award in the category »Best Realisation«. The decision will be made by a jury of experts consisting of an author, a director and an editor.
In the competition, different realisations of one and the same text are created, which raises questions about the relationship between text and sound: What is it about a text that sounds? What makes a radiophonic realisation of a text?
The competition aims to network young authors and directors with up-and-coming authors, to promote them and to inspire them for radio art. Radio play editors are also made aware of new directors. Many productions or follow-up productions by up-and-coming directors have been able to find their place on short programmes of public broadcasters or have been played at other festivals.
The Hörspielsommer takes place annually for ten days in June/July at the Richard-Wagner Hain in Leipzig. It is a Germany-wide festival for radio plays. The open-air event attracts several thousand guests every year, who can watch a variety of radio plays, radio play competitions and live performances and encounter the medium »radio play«.
