In the video workshop at the Faculty of Art and Design, students are able to apply artistic and design methods to moving electronic images. Strong emphasis is placed on the electronic tools which are necessary for carrying out a variety of different processes. At the video workshop’s lending office, students and staff of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar can choose from a wide selection of recording and presentation equipment, such as HD and 4K video cameras, audio recording devices, microphones, tripods, lights and an extensive range of peripherals, playback devices, monitors and slide projectors.
The building, in which the video workshop is installed, is specially designed to meet the latest structural and technical standards in video technology processing. The editing rooms and studio which include a control room and audio recording booth are fully air-conditioned and acoustically decoupled. The entire building is equipped with variable audio and video wiring and connections. All workstations are interconnected and linked up to the university’s mainframe.
An 80-m2, fully equipped video studio and control room is located on the first floor of the video workshop. The studio is fitted with two studio cameras and a console-controlled ceiling light system. With the appropriate sets and structures, students can use the studio to create their own editorial, narrative and experimental productions. The position, size and movement of people and objects can be influenced with the aid of the large-format blue screen and the corresponding technical devices in the control room. The resulting moving-image sequence can then be superimposed onto a pre-made background. This allows the video artists to experiment with a variety of video recording formats, including HD, 4K and Apple ProRes 422 HQ. And finally, the range of recording possibilities includes a recording booth ideally suited for audio taping and voice-overs.
For presentations, the studio has a full-HD projector with playback devices and a 5.1 audio system.
There are seven »Apple Final Cut Pro X« editing stations for post-production work. These allow students to process their HD and 4K material in an intuitive and professional manner. Adobe Premiere, Photoshop and After Effects, Illustrator, InDesign and Audition are installed on all of the computers at the video workshop. Following an introduction to the workshop and what it offers, students can work by themselves in the video studio and, should they need help, can receive personal assistance and advice from the workshop staff.
The video workshop is managed by two qualified staff members. The managing director is primarily responsible for coordinating the use of the workshop with the instructors, planning the purchase of new equipment and introducing users to the technology at the workshop. The second staff member, a video technician, is mainly responsible for providing assistance, servicing and repairing devices and equipment, as well as managing the lending service.
Thanks to the Thoska locking system, the work spaces of the video workshop are also available outside the regular opening hours.
A wide variety of works can be produced at the video workshop. These include short films, animation, experimental films, features, documentaries, music clips and video installations.
