Abstract:
Špela Petrič’s artistic interest over the past few years has revolved around plants, specifically the western metaphysical underpinnings of so-called plant-blindness, which predisposes people to ignorance of plants and undermines their active participation in ecosystems. Because of their specific properties, plants are stripped of empathic and ethical consideration and hierarchically placed at the very bottom of the tree of life, fulfilling the role of organisms at the transition between mineral and animal – as much a material as a living entity. With the new form of biotechnologically mediated biopolitics, we now realize that the principle inconsideration of plants is extending to humans as well – a condition Sandilands dubbed "the vegetariat". As an act of defiance to the totalizing commodification of life, Petrič turns to plants to identify their agency; if we are indeed becoming the vegetariat, what capacities does the vegetariat possess?

Biography:
Špela Petrič, BSc, MA, PhD, is a Slovenian new media artist and former scientific researcher currently based between Ljubljana, SI and Amsterdam, NL. Her practice is a multi-species endeavor, a composite of natural sciences, wet media and performance. She envisions artistic experiments that enact strange relationalities to reveal the ontological and epistemological underpinnings of our technological societies and challenge the scope of the adjacent possible. Much of her recent work has focused on plant life. Her work has been shown at many festivals, exhibitions and educational events (Abandon Normal Devices (UK), Venice Biennial of Architecture (IT), Touch Me Festival (CRO), Pixxelpoint (IT), European Conference on Artificial Life (IT), Playaround (TW), Harvard (ZDA), Ars Electronica (AT), National Center for Biological Sciences (IN), HAIP (SI), Arscope (GER), Mutamorphosis (CZ), Galleries de la Reine (BE)…).  For her work she also received several awards including the White Aphroid for outstanding artistic achievement, the Bioart and Design Award and an honorary mention at Prix Ars Electronica.

Abstract:
Der Vortrag versteht den aktuellen Diagrammatik-Diskurs als philosophischen Reflexionsdiskurs zu zentralen Fragen der Informationsvisualisierung und der Interfacetheorie. Diesem Verständnis zufolge bündeln sich unter dem Schlagwort ›Diagrammatik‹ wesentliche Fragen der Verknüpfung von Informationsvisualisierung und Interfacetheorie mit der gegebenen (digitalen) Medienkultur. Vor diesem Hintergrund bemüht sich der Vortrag darum, Fragen der verräumlichten Repräsentation von Information und der Interaktion mit User-Interfaces auch in ihrer kulturhistorischen Tiefendimension begreifbar zu machen.

Biographie:
PD Dr. Christoph Ernst, wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter an der Universität Bonn im DFG-Projekt »Van Gogh-TV«. 2014-2015 Vertretung der Professur für Multimediale Systeme an der Universität Siegen, 2015-2017 wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter für Medientheorie an der Universität Bonn, dort auch 2017-2018 Vertretung der Professur für Medienkulturwissenschaft. Zu seinen Arbeitsschwerpunkten zählen Diagrammatik & Medienästhetik der Informationsvisualisierung; Theorien des impliziten Wissens & digitale Medien, insb. Interfacetheorie; Medientheorie & Medienphilosophie, insb. Medienimagination & Interkulturalität; Ästhetik & Theorie audiovisueller Medien (Film & Fernsehen).
