Doctoral degree programme (Ph.D.)
The aim of this doctoral programme is to provide an academic degree for artists and designers who have already completed a master's or diploma degree at an art or design university. The four-year study programme is completed with a Ph.D. thesis, which consists of a scientific and an artistic or design component in equal measure. The Faculty of Art and Design thus offers a dual qualification with a practical and academic degree, which is unique in Germany. Both qualifications can be used in teaching and research as well as in the field of exhibitions, in the organisation of cultural events or in culturally active institutions.
Mentoring system and study programme
Each student is personally supervised by at least two university teachers for the entire duration of their studies, with one mentor representing the academic subjects and the other the artistic or design subjects. One of the two mentors must be from the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, the second mentor may come from another university. In certain cases, particularly interdisciplinary ones, where external expertise is required, a third mentor may be invited. The four-year study programme (curriculum) primarily serves to accompany and support the academic research work. It essentially consists of the graduate seminar, graduate colloquium and courses in the area of key qualifications. In addition, separate courses (seminar, project, conference, workshop) are prepared and organised.
Application and start of studies
Admission to the study programme is stipulated in the Entrance Examination Regulations and requires close artistic or creative and academic involvement with the teaching and research activities of the Faculty of Art and Design in general and the teaching and research focuses of the respective mentors in particular. The application deadline is usually 31 March of the year. The doctoral programme begins in the winter semester.

Doctoral degree (Dr.phil.)
Die Bauhaus-Universität Weimar verleiht durch die Fakultät Kunst und Gestaltung den akademischen Grad »Doctor philosophiae« (Dr. phil.). Durch die Promotion wird die Befähigung zu vertiefter und selbstständiger wissenschaftlicher Arbeit nachgewiesen. Dieser Nachweis wird durch eine Dissertation als wissenschaftlich beachtliche schriftliche Arbeit sowie durch eine Disputation als Vortrag mit anschließender Befragung des Doktoranden erbracht.

Betreuung und Zulassung
Die Dissertation wird von mindestens einem Professor/einer Professorin der Fakultät Kunst und Gestaltung betreut. Eine gemeinsame Betreuung durch Hochschullehrer*innen der Bauhaus-Universität Weimar und/oder mit anderen Hochschulen ist möglich. Die Betreuung wird durch eine Betreuungserklärung und eine zusätzliche Mentor*innen-Erklärung formalisiert. Eine Zulassung ist nach Antrag möglich und von allgemeinen Bewerbungs- bzw. Semesterfristen unabhängig. Die Betreuung und die Zulassung werden durch die Promotionsordnung geregelt. Die Graduierungskommission ist das verantwortliche Gremium der Fakultät zur Beschlussfassung in Promotionsangelegenheiten, zur Überwachung des ordnungsgemäßen Ablaufs von Promotionsverfahren und Schlichtungsstelle bei auftretenden Unzulänglichkeiten.
