9. BauSIM in Weimar

20. - 22. September 2022

Climate change, a global pandemic and energy shortages in Europe - 3 crises that have a firm grip on society. At the same time, however, there are also crises to which building physics and methods developed by the community, such as building simulation, can help to solve. Against this background, around 150 researchers and developers came together for the BauSIM 2022 conference in Weimar. The IBPSA Germany and Austria conference was chaired by Prof. Conrad Völker and Dr.-Ing. Albert Vogel, both organized by the professorship for building physics at the Bauhaus University in Weimar. This year, the subject areas considered were not only of great importance within the building and district simulation community. Public interest was greater than ever before, and for the first time there were also reports on the event on television.

90 lectures in 14 sessions discussed highly topical topics such as energetic building and district modelling, comfort and indoor climate, BIM-based planning tools, validation and quality assurance as well as numerical methods and optimization. Another premiere was the presence of the acoustic simulation at this year's BauSIM.

BauSIM 2022 was opened by Prof. Conrad Völker and the Chancellor of the Bauhaus University Weimar, followed by keynote speeches by Prof. Arno Schlueter (ETH Zurich) and Prof. Christina Hopfe (TU Graz). In addition, the President of IBPSA-Germany and Austria, Prof. John Grunewald (TU Dresden), presented an open letter to the German Federal Government, in which it is requested that the European Building Directive EPBD be implemented as a German standard as soon as possible.

The specialist lectures were accompanied by a large number of not only scientific events - from a drum circle, which encouraged all participants to get involved, to a specially brewed beer, the BauSIM 2022 beer. In addition, the Professorship of Building Physics opened its laboratories and guided visitors through the climate chamber, the acoustics and the Schlieren laboratory.

After three very informative days, the conference ended with an acoustic keynote by Dr. Josep Llorca Bofi (RWTH Aachen) and a Best Paper Award was given to the contribution "Replacing time-consuming building performance simulations with real-time surrogate models and their application in early-stage design space exploration" by Manuel Frey and Max Zorn (main authors ) awarded, whose contribution will be published with five other selected contributions in the journal Bauphysics.

The IBPSA community will meet again at the latest at the next BauSIM, which will take place in 2024 at the Vienna University of Technology under the direction of Prof. Bednar.
