Mathias Artus, Mohamed Alabassy and Christian Koch have published the article "A BIM Based Framework for Damage Segmentation, Modeling, and Visualization Using IFC" in Applied Sciences. The article describes a framework for generating defect geometries from photos and inserting the resulting geometry data into the BIM model. Additional semantic damage information is added to the model as well. The resulting model can be used for further inspection, analysis, or repair. As an example, the article explains the visualization of the model for the purpose of assessment.
