»Student Design Studio« opens

Starting in the winter semester 2018/19, students from the Faculty of Civil Engineering will have access to a new group workspace: Room 303, next to the Luna pools in the attic of Marienstraße 7A, has been converted into a »Student Design Studio«. It can accommodate a total of 30 students and is specially designed for group project work together.

Following a successful trial with students of the Master's Degrees Digital Engineering and Natural Hazards and Risks in Structural Engineering (NHRE), the "Student Design Studio" was founded on July 25, 2018 by initiator Prof. Dr.-Ing. Christian Koch, Chair of Intelligent Technical Design, ceremoniously opened. Thus, the Faculty of Civil Engineering facilitates all students working together in interdisciplinary teams. "The existing computer pools are more for individual work on the PC, with the new work space, the synchronous cooperation should be facilitated," explains Prof. Koch.

Modern group workplaces for project study

The new workspace was equipped with powerful computers and new furniture: It has six group workstations for five students each. Each seat is equipped with a modern PC with a swivel monitor and external device connections. There is also a whiteboard and a video projector in the room. This creates a modern work environment for group work and project study. "In the future, VR glasses will also be added so that students can view 3D models in virtual reality," reports Prof. Koch. At the suggestion of the digital engineering students, the erection of mobile partition walls as well as additional measures for noise reduction is conceivable.

Central to the teaching of the Faculty of Civil Engineering is the study of the project, i. the practice-oriented, interdisciplinary examination of a question. The new »Student Design Studio« creates ideal working conditions for this purpose and thus further improves the quality of study and teaching.
