Monitoring and improving road safety are complex issues that touch on a wide range of disciplines, including engineering, mechanics, psychology and sociology. In order to improve road safety throughout Europe, a road infrastructure safety management system was introduced in 2008 by EU Directive 2008/96/EC and updated in 2019, which is applied by all responsible employees of the respective authorities. The challenges: The directive can only be implemented efficiently if the relevant persons are well trained, gain experience in this field and constantly expand their knowledge. In addition, international exchange at European level is necessary in order to standardise the implementation of high safety standards through appropriate methods and instruments.

The EuroS@P project starts here: By developing innovative didactic materials, it aims to raise the level of training of responsible persons in public authorities and universities and thus ultimately improve road safety. Components will include safety assessment methods, on-site safety investigations and an e-learning platform. The Chair of Transport System Planning is participating in the EuroS@P project, which runs until the end of August 2023 and is funded by the European Commission.
