Quality assessment of existing fatigue evaluation methods
Fatigue, the phenomenon in which a crack develops and extends under cyclic stressing conditions, accounts for the vast majority of service failures. A significant feature of fatigue is that the load is not large enough to cause immediate failure instead, failure occurs after a certain number of load fluctuations have been experienced. The prediction of fatigue properties of structures and avoiding structural fatigue were recognized as engineering problems in the early decades of the 20th century.
The subject has been studied in depth by both engineers and metallurgists but substantial communication problem still exist between these two disciplines. For an inspection engineer therefore it is complicated to predict the exact remaining fatigue life of a structural member as several methods or guidelines are available in this field coming from both disciplines without any benchmark.
