Station 1: University Library, Steubenstraße 6
From 6 pm to midnight, visitors can learn about studying at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, be introduced to original Lucia Verlag publications, or marvel at a six-axis robot arm that paints pictures on site for you to take home. In the GRAMA Lounge, visitors can experience and experiment with test projects from the Computer Science of Media department. The »Heritage Futures – Time Capsule« participatory exhibition will examine the role heritage plays in our future and in which ways we may want to hold on to it or let it go.
Employees will be offering tours through the University Library, guiding guests through the collections, and doctoral and post-doctoral researchers will demonstrate what junior research of the future looks like through the »Entdecken.Entwickeln.Gestalten« exhibition. Interested visitors will also be able to experience real-scale construction designs by using virtual reality. In addition to these hands-on activities, there will also be scientific talks by lecturers from the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar in the Audimax every hour on the hour from 6 to 10 pm. The university’s history, perspectives for a sustainable future, the role of algorithms in writing and the potential of hydrogen for heating are among the topics that will be discussed.
Station 2: Learnraum.Bauhaus 003, Amalienstraße 13
Staff will demonstrate how future hybrid teaching and learning spaces will be designed and used at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar in the »Hybriden Lernatelier«. This interactive event, which can host up to ten people at a time, will take place from 6 to 10 pm.
Station 3: Digital Bauhaus Lab, Bauhausstraße 9a
From 7 to 10 pm, visitors will be able to test the latest technology for themselves and explore virtual space in the Faculty of Media’s Virtual Reality Lab. Interested guests can learn about how computer science and technology can help improve the lives of those living with dementia. Two performances by students from the Faculty of Art and Design will round out the programme. Students Belcim Yavuz and Valeriia Shakhova will explore the topics of oppression, silencing and trauma in their digital performance »Sense_or?« from 7 to 8:30 pm. From 8:30 to 10:00, student Joel Schäfer will present a live audiovisual composition exploring the abstract aesthetics of digitality, hybridity and the deep-sea habitat.
Station 4: Science Mile Q3, Coudraystraße 4 – 13
The Faculty of Civil Engineering will open its labs in Coudraystraße for visitors to experience their exhibition »300 Meter Wissenschaft – von der versteckten Universität zur Science Mile« and to see what the future of research will look like there. Those wishing to get up close and personal with live experiments can visit the »Halle der Versuchstechnischen Einrichtung (VTE)« at Coudraystraße 4 from 6 to 10 pm. How much force can a straw bale bear? How can buildings be virtually inspected? And how can smart phones be used to take measurements? The »Alles ist Ressource« presentation at the Bauhaus-Institute for Infrastructure Solutions (b.is) at Coudraystraße 10 from 6pm to midnight will provide information on how energy can be obtained from waste and waste water.
A guided tour titled »CSI Baustoffe – ein Exkurs in die Baustoffforschung« at Coudraystraße 11A will be offered every hour on the hour from 6 to 10 pm. The tour begins in the foyer of the F.A. Finger Institute for Building Material Engineering. A corresponding workshop on modern loam construction will be held in the Concrete Lab of the same building from 6 to 9 pm. The workshop is limited to 25 participants and pre-registration is advised: larissa.daube[at]uni-weimar.de.
The Building Physics Department’s Schlieren Lab will also be presenting their Schlieren mirror, which literally »makes the invisible visible«, and will examine breathing air in the room. The Climate Chamber in Coudraystraße 13 C (entry via Coudraystraße 11), room 012, will be enlightening guests on how indoor climate will be researched in the future — an increasingly relevant topic given the pandemic and energy crisis.
Women scientists from the Faculty of Civil Engineering will be hosting a »Queens of Science and Engineering« pub quiz in the »Reservebank« at Geschwister-Scholl-Straße 1. Who actually invented coding? How many pioneering women are there in science and technology? And what did they research and develop? These questions and others will be answered. Teams will compete against one another for prizes.
Weimar and Weimarer Land are inviting local companies and scientific institutions to participate in the Long Night of Sciences for the third time. The Bauhaus-Universität Weimar has participated in this event every year since 2017.
During the event, visitors can take advantage of the free shuttle bus service to get to the various event locations. Entrance is free of charge. The programme brochure, which includes all the stops, is available on the shuttle buses and at all participating institutions.
