»Teaching is an individual process and involves little exchange. Instructors develop their own teaching methods and knowledge over time. The art of teaching tends to be perceived as a solitary craft, yet it actually involves establishing relationships — relationships between space and time, individuals and forces. And how can you find out what good teaching really is? I discuss all of these things with guests in the podcast episodes«, says Frisch.
Interviewees speak about their everyday lives as instructors and their ideas about success and failure in teaching. Listeners can expect first-hand impressions of the world of teaching in the four faculties and discover, episode by episode, the diverse personalities at the university, their fields and teaching approaches. It makes a difference to both instructors and students whether teaching is in the natural sciences and mathematics, the humanities, planning and development, or design and art. It matters if this is taught in lectures, projects that involve a high degree of creative input from students, or through reading and reflecting together on texts. On the other hand, these all have one thing in common: Successful teaching involves being open to the other person and subsequently »learning from one another«. Last but not least, it’s clear that teaching can bring you joy.
In the one-hour talks, instructors from all fields at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar share their stories, from environmental engineering, philosophy and the humanities, computer science and architecture and urban planning, and, of course, from the field of art and design. Professors, scientific and artistic staff members, and also individuals who are involved in the background of establishing teaching conditions, share their experiences.
Students who teach pupils themselves are also interviewed. Lorenz Ludwig, Computer Science student, kicks off the podcast series. He reports on finding beauty in understanding mathematical connections. This motivates him to teach himself and to share his knowledge in unexpected ways, for instance through a radio play.
»Zwischen Magie und Handwerk« is intended for all kinds of listeners: Prospective students are invited to take a look behind the scenes of a university course and teaching staff can be inspired by the experiences and methods of other instructors. Students might discover a detail or two about their »profs«, and listeners can learn in general about what life, teaching and learning at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar looks like today.
