The Bauhaus-Universität Weimar Freundeskreis e.V. immediately established an »Emergency Fund for Students and Academics from Crisis Regions« (Notfallfonds für Studierende und Wissenschaftler*innen aus Krisengebieten) to organise this ad hoc initiative and directly distribute aid to those affected by the crisis. This fund provides aid to students, doctoral candidates and researchers at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar who are in financial need due to armed conflicts in their home countries. Aid may be distributed as one-time payments or as scholarships that last several months.
The Birgit und Thomas Rabe Stiftung made a generous donation as soon as the emergency fund was established. The Chair of the University Council, Dr. Thomas Rabe, and his wife, Dr. Birgit Rabe, made it possible for fifteen students to receive financial support in the form of the maximum BAföG rate of EUR 861 per month for one year during this currently unpredictable situation. This will provide these students with financial security for their continued stay in Weimar.
Dr. Thomas Rabe stated: »The war is causing unspeakable suffering for the people in Ukraine. From the very start, however, it has had repercussions beyond the war zone; Europe’s peace order, democracy and freedom are all under threat. This war affects people all over Europe. This includes Ukrainians, but also Russians who are studying with us in Germany and are now living in fear, economic hardship or unjustified sweeping condemnation. We want to help precisely these students at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar with our donation.«
Prof. Dr. Jutta Emes, interim Bauhaus-Universität Weimar President, said: »We are very grateful for the generous donation made by University Council Chair Dr. Thomas Rabe; this will allow us to help our affected students in an uncomplicated and speedy manner. The need for financial support was made clear to us through individual discussions with the students.«
The Freundeskreis is calling for donations for other refugees from Ukraine who are coming to Weimar and enrolling at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar and who cannot receive any other financial support. A joint committee of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar and the Bauhaus-Universität Freundeskreis decide on funding within just a few days. This way, donations raised can reach the students, doctoral candidates and scientists quickly and directly.
