Media Art Students from the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar to Participate Once Again in Ars Electronica 2024

Media Art and Design students from the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar will be presenting their work at this year’s »Ars Electronica 2024« in Linz from 4 to 8 September 2024. Under this year’s slogan, »sense & sense-abilities«, artists are inviting visitors to reflect on subjective sensory experiences and how they influence our behaviour through interactive installations and performances.

The exhibition in the »Campus« area of Ars Electronica explores our individual perceptions of the world and how we communicate with one another. Students will look at how subjective experiences can be made visible and tangible to others, as well as how our own perceptions influence our behaviours. Visitors are invited to discover new approaches to sensory experiences. Five pieces will be exhibited, including performances, installations and interactive experiences. Visitors are invited to examine their own senses and discover new perspectives.

»The Brainless Dancer« by Passion Asasu, a student in the »Media Art and Design« Master’s degree programme, is an interactive performance that explores the dynamics of female bodies under the influences of patriarchy and capitalism. During her performance, the artist dons special clothing on to which balloons have been sewn. When the audience approaches, sensors react and the balloons either inflate or deflate, mutating the protagonists »body«. Passion Asasu uses air and distance to depict individual social forces. The audience is actively involved in the performance, which reflects the interactions between power, perception and physicality.

Chanitnanth Phadungnanonth, another Master’s student, will be presenting her installation »Heart to Heart«. The audience is invited to sit on two lounge chairs, which are outfitted with sensors that amplify the rhythms of two heartbeats. These signals are transmitted into two pools of water, whose surface then pulsates and makes the heartbeat visible. The work creates an intimate, non-verbal communication between participants and invites them to reflect on shared emotional states. Connections and barriers between individuals are presented in a new, physical way.
