The Faculty of Media is the newest of the four faculties at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. Founded 25 years ago, it has nevertheless made an important contribution to the image of the university – through innovative impulses, progressive research, creative teaching and diverse commitments on committees and in the public sphere. On 16 October 1996, the faculty launched its teaching and research with the Media Culture and Media Design degree programmes and some 150 enrolled students. Just a few years later in 1999, the Media Systems (today: Informatics) degree programme was inaugurated. Since 2007, the portfolio has been supplemented by the Media Management Master’s degree programme. Although the structure as well as the size of the faculty have changed since those days, its focus is still clearly on creative research into media-related challenges of the present and future.
In its current form, the Faculty of Media includes three schools: Media Studies, Computer Science and Media, and Media Management. Across these three areas, 21 professors and more than 80 research assistants teach some 650 students, who come to Weimar from all over the world – for example, from France, Canada, the USA, Russia, India and China. The faculty also has a wide and diverse range of international partnerships and exchange programmes with institutes and universities in Maastricht, Malaga, Montreal, Vilnius, Vienna, Vancouver and many more.
The spectrum of topics covered by the professorships today is as diverse as it is challenging. It extends from Media Philosophy to Virtual Reality, from Film Studies to Media Security, from History of Cultural Techniques, via Marketing, to Web Technologies and Content Management. It covers Visual Media Theory as well as Human-Computer-Interaction, Innovation Management as well as Literary Research, Media Sociology as well as Digital Economies and Digital Cultures. Concerning the originally declared intention – to intervene in the development of media by means of innovative design and scientific research, to accompany this development constructively, creatively and critically – nothing whatsoever has changed.
Many of those who have accompanied the development and growth of the faculty will have the opportunity to speak at this ceremony; current research topics and trends will be discussed, and a future prognosis ventured. All those interested are warmly invited to attend. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, prior registration under presse[at]medien.uni-weimar.de is required. The event can also be followed online via livestream. Further information, the ceremony programme and the livestream can be found at https://www.uni-weimar.de/medien/25jahre .
