The title of the exhibition was inspired by a principle of quantum physics called »spooky action at a distance«; this principle refers to entanglement whereby two particles can communicate instantaneously, even if they are separated by a great distance. Albert Einstein was never able to prove this theory of entanglement and dubbed it »spooky action at a distance« - not exactly scientific sounding.
Based on this phenomenon, which has since been extensively researched but still cannot be explained using our current knowledge of physics, the exhibition in the University Gallery will showcase cross-media works that address temporal or spatial entanglement in a figurative sense. The »nova space« will morph into a ›neutral space‹ or a ›sterile laboratory‹ showcasing experimental set-ups and other works that explore individual questions that are both artistic and scientific at the same time. The »spooky action at a distance« element of the exhibition can be seen in other spaces: Art related to the exhibition will be displayed in public spaces across Erfurt and Weimar.
»Spooky Actions« explores the interface between art and science, and between artistic practice and research as is taught in the »Art and Design« Ph.D. programme in the Faculty of Art and Design. The exhibition is a collaboration between »nova space« and the Ph.D. programme and is a component of the SAR International Conference.
