This year, the interdisciplinary Bauhaus.Module entitled »Möbel machen Mensa« stands for everything that makes up studies at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar: the consideration of social needs, participation of countless disciplines, creativity and implementation of one’s own ideas in the workshops. The Mensa am Park cafeteria was entirely refurbished last year. Students campaigned for the foyer on the ground floor to be given an entirely new look and layout as part of this – to make it more of a versatile lounge offering space for co-working, physical activity during study breaks and an information exchange. A student group led by the students Niels Cremer (Faculty of Art and Design) and Raffael Welter (Faculty of Architecture and Urban Studies) has now designed armchairs, sofas and beanbags, which will be presented for the first time during summaery2022. Curious? Then come check out their work!

Faculty of Media
Every year, a different faculty is responsible for organising the summaery – and this year it is the Faculty of Media’s turn. As such, it is thus only logical that the project that lent the faculty its name also has its origins there, namely in European media culture. The project »SHAKIN’« questions the origin of knowledge, including knowledge that does not emanate from an academic environment but rather from practice. It also examines knowledge created by other media though – by machines, orally via YouTube or through bodily practices such as dance, for instance. The project itself is a collaboration between three universities (Université Lumière Lyon 2, Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, University of Arts Belgrade) and three cultural organisations (Association Independent Cultural Scene of Serbia, Stockholm Museum of Women’s History, Le LABA) that are working together for the inclusion and development of subaltern knowledge.
Works by students as well as a handbook on the subject of »subaltern knowledge« can be viewed in the exhibition on »SHAKIN’«. Projects include performances, exhibitions, interventions in public spaces, a feminist audio walk, graffiti and fanzine workshops, and documentary film productions.
Location: University Library, Steubenstraße 6, GRAMA-Lounge
The interdisciplinary project »Let’s have fun – exploring playfulness in interaction design« is also being showcased at the Faculty of Media. Nine students from different countries devoted themselves to the concept of »playfulness«. A detailed analysis of the literature in the field of human-computer interaction and design research as well as empirical studies conducted by the authors themselves formed the basis of the students’ responses to the question of how products can be improved with the help of playful interaction design and how new fields of application can be opened up. Five projects emerged – from a radio for senior citizens to a digital place mat – which let us experience everyday objects in new ways.
Location: Schwanseestraße 143, Room 2.40, First Floor
Many visitors to the summaery will be interested to see the Faculty of Media’s new campus at Schwanseestraße 143. The move was prepared for months and, in March 2022, the time had finally come: the departments of media studies and computer science as well as the dean’s office relocated to the temporary premises where they will spend the coming three years so that 500 students can continue pursuing their studies at the new premises on what has been dubbed the »Coca-Cola site«, just in time for the summer semester. Countless rooms and labs can be visited during the summaery, among others during the Open Lab Night taking place from 5 pm on Friday.
Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism
The main exhibitions of the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism traditionally take place around the Main Building and courtyard. A striking temporary building has once again been erected this year. Master’s students from the architecture programme constructed the »Freibad-Kolonnade« outside the Main Building, a wooden structure on a scale of 1:1 that will provide a covered space for the summaery opening, for celebrating, dancing, gathering and cooking over the four days. After the summaery, the structure will serve as the extension to an open-air swimming pool in southern Thuringia, setting an architectural example for the further development of this important social location and contributing to revitalisation of the rural area.
Location: Open space outside the Main Building/M18, Geschwister-Scholl-Straße 8
The steel »x.stahl« structure will also once again form a focus of the summaery. Nine interdisciplinary student teams participated in a competition to develop concepts for the most resource-efficient and adaptive façades possible for the »x.stahl« experimental building, which is to be transformed further in the coming years to create a learning, research and presentation workshop. Selected approaches will be exhibited at the summaery2022 and provide an opportunity for a broad discussion and further participation formats on the campus design. Presentations/guided tours will take place at 1 pm and 3 pm on Saturday, 16 July.
Location: Kubus 1b, Ground Floor, area behind Kubus 1b
Faculty of Civil Engineering
In addition to the SCIENCE MILE Q3 on Friday, the faculty will also enable visitors to explore several other projects. A canoe made of concrete demonstrates the versatility of this material. The »concrete canoe« won several prizes at the famous concrete canoe regatta in June 2022. In addition to sporting successes, the team also impressed in the »Construction«, »Design«, »Regatta Shirt« and, most recently, »Social Media« categories – something that no other competitor managed. The winning boat can be viewed on Friday in the »gap« behind Marienstraße 9, then in the lecture hall at Marienstraße 13.
Within the Bauhaus.Module »Textile Umwelten« on textile environments, environmental engineering students worked with artists to address yet another important issue, namely the circular economy of textiles, biodegradable materials and the sorting process and use of old textiles. Following extensive trips to the clothing store, sorting plant and incinerator, students questioned the existing sorting process and conceived ideas for processing procedures, classifications, databases and recognition systems or the repair of old textiles. The aim was to develop an overarching awareness and a professional and artistic positioning to resource-conserving and sustainable action. The outcome is an exhibition in which students fundamentally examine, question and rethink textile value chains.

Faculty of Art and Design
For the Faculty of Art and Design, the summaery exhibition is often part of the study programme for which marks are awarded. Hence the presentations here are particularly varied and dotted around countless locations throughout Weimar. Among the many offerings, two presentations come highly recommended. »Post Physical Playgrounds – an NFT Art Exhibition« is dedicated to the opportunities and challenges of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) in the art context. The exhibition’s makers attempt to consider the full scope and variety of possibilities and effects that NFT technology brings with it – both the negative ones and the positive ones. Guests are able to view NFT artworks on a large screen and via VR headsets in the Digital Bauhaus Lab.
Location: Digital Bauhaus Lab, Bauhausstr. 9a
In the project »PLAYDATE – A Place to Fall in Play«, students take a playful approach to the outcomes of their semester’s work. Board games have been created as part of the »Spielregeln des Designs« seminar led by Johannes Lang that can be tried and tested over a drink and in a relaxed atmosphere in the courtyard behind the Van de Velde Building. The games are the result of a systematic preoccupation with various sensory or emotional phenomena. Whether to relax, to get to know others or both, they’re a great opportunity to play.
Times: Thursday, 6–10 pm; Friday and Saturday, 1–9 pm; Sunday, 2–9 pm
Location: Freifläche 3 (on the platform, behind the Van de Velde Building)
