There are few topics more pressing right now than energy; gas is becoming scarce and increasingly more expensive. At the same time, environmental protection demands a rapid shift towards renewable energy. But the question remains: how do we decrease energy consumption without sacrificing comfort? Many people’s everyday lives are becoming preoccupied with this very question,  and BauSIM 2022 is looking for solutions. The conference will be focused on the high energy consumption of buildings and communities, which together are responsible for generating around 36 percent of all greenhouse gas emitted in the European Union.

»Nearly 90 percent of the conference’s submissions deal with the goal of reducing energy consumption. In order to achieve this, the condition and energy consumption of buildings must be accurately calculated«, explains conference director Prof. Dr. Conrad Völker. His department of Building Physics is organising the 2022 event through the support of the International Building Performance Simulation Association. »Based on these calculations, the energy consumption of buildings and communities can be simulated under various conditions, allowing us to come up with appropriate recommendations, for example energy-related renovations or ideal methods for heating, shading, cooling and ventilating«, adds Prof. Völker. 

In addition to reliable measurements, the behaviour of those living or working in these buildings also plays a role in the accuracy of the prognosis models. There is a high demand for a number of various disciplines, including engineering, architecture, physics and computer science. Prognosis models are not only useful for providing insight into reducing energy consumption and protecting the environment, they can also be helpful when it comes to addressing issues such as acoustics and health, such as proper ventilation to stop the spread of the coronavirus. The question of how these findings can be applied to solar energy systems, green façades and heat pumps will also be addressed. 

The Weimar conference is expected to attract nearly 150 guests from science and the industry from across Europe. Universities and universities of applied science will be represented along with engineering and architecture firms, the construction industry and public administration. The conference was first held in 2006 and is taking place for the ninth time.
