»Over 140 students used architectural design tools to find a structural expression for future Jewish life in Germany«, said Prof. Jörg Springer, professor of Design and Complex Theory of Buildings at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar and co-editor of the publication. »The goal of »Das Synagogen-Projekt« (The Synagogue Project) is to make a tangible contribution to the current intensive debate surrounding reconstructing synagogues destroyed in Germany in the 1930s and the associated visibility of Jewish life in major German cities.«
A selection of outstanding student designs will be exhibited in the Berlin House of Representatives. The Weimar exhibition focuses on the publication on »Das Synagogen-Projekt« (The Synagogue Project). In addition to illustrations of selected works, representatives from the Jewish community as well as Hamburg’s Chief Planning Director Franz-Josef Höing will be explaining their perspectives on the past and future of the synagogues in both cities through individual interviews and the book launch. Together with Mirjam Wenzel, Director of the Jewish Museum in Frankfurt, Salomon Korn, former Vice-President of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, Rabbi Edward van Voolen and Swiss architect Roger Diener will be among those discussing the history and significance of synagogues in German cities as sites of religious and cultural Jewish life.
