Since it was established in 1996, the Faculty of Media has worked to embody the philosophy of the university – to create synergies between the scientific theory and artistic experimentation – through, with and in media. The Bauhaus-Universität Weimar has demonstrated that media plays an increasingly significant role in the fields of science, art, society and business. By combining and integrating traditionally unrelated disciplines, the faculty strives to do justice to the complexity of its subject of study.
The faculty is divided into three main departments – Computer Science, Media Studies and Media Management – comprised of 16 full chairs and 5 junior chairs which are systematically interconnected with one another. Together with their students, they regularly develop excellent and creative approaches, characterised by experimental working methods and curiosity-driven research. The faculty’s researchers and instructors are devoted to sustainably supporting and promoting these activities.
All the media degree programmes in Weimar are characterised by a well-supervised research environment, unrestricted creativity and experimentation in excellently equipped laboratories and workshops. The Faculty of Media is unlike any other in Germany; our academic and professional competence is concentrated in eight degree programmes which enable students to pursue their interests and take advantage of their personal talents in an independent and interdisciplinary manner. In this way, we do our part to foster the spirit of the university: Experiment Bauhaus!
The dynamic environment at our faculty encourages personal initiative and commitment in its students and prepares them to become creative and academic media professionals. Project-oriented study in small teams and personal contact to one’s instructors provide the optimal conditions for putting one’s practical skills to the test. Our focus is not only on allowing students to use what they have learned, but also teaching them to independently and critically question conventional knowledge. And throughout their entire education, our students are encouraged to look beyond their subject of study and take advantage of the courses offered by other degree programmes and faculties.
The international character of the Faculty of Media features a wide range of courses and events that are held in English and French, as well as an intensive promotion of the cooperation with universities abroad. Since 1998, the faculty has successfully offered the study program »European Media Culture« in collaboration with the Université Lumière Lyon 2. At the faculty’s Department of Computer Science, prospective students can choose among three master programs completely held in English which include the M. Sc. program »Digital Engineering« that has been offered since 2017 in collaboration with the faculty of Civil Engineering. In this manner, the Faculty of Media promotes the international exchange among students and prepares them optimally for nowadays global job market.
