»One of the great challenges with designing interactions between people and machines is helping each party understand what the other is perceiving, thinking and about to do. Many in the social robotics arena argue that this is a reason for anthropomorphic (human-shaped) and anthro-mimetic (human-acting) robots. And yet, it is also often the case that robots need to be designed expressly to complement human capabilities and functions. How then do we best design for interactions with other bodies and other minds? In this talk, I explore the role that simulation and prototyping can play in making use of human perception, cognition and prediction to create novel patterns for interaction that work in practice.«
Wendy Ju is an Associate Professor at Cornell Tech and Technion – Israel Institute of Technology. Her work in the areas of human-robot interaction and automated vehicle interfaces highlights the ways that interactive devices can be designed to be safer, more predictable, and more socially appropriate. Professor Ju has innovated numerous methods for early-stage prototyping of automated systems to understand how people will respond to systems before the systems are built. She has a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford, and a Master’s in Media Arts and Sciences from MIT. Her monograph on The Design of Implicit Interactions was published in 2015.
