1. Travelling by train with "Deutsche Bahn"
The railway system operated by the Deutsche Bahn extends to every corner of Germany. From Weimar you can reach all the major cities in Germany. Berlin, Dresden and Frankfurt/Main are all about two hours away by train. On the Deutsche Bahn website, you can find suitable connections and purchase/print out your own tickets from home. Although students are not eligible for special rebates, if you book earlier enough, you can get great deals on tickets for destinations throughout Europe.
2. Travelling with "Mitfahrgelegenheit"
Joining a “car-share” is an inexpensive and sometimes exciting way to travel. On the free online portal “Mitfahrgelegenheit.de”, drivers offer to take one or more passengers with them (for a fee) to their specific destinations. If you find someone who is going in your direction, you agree on a pick-up time by simply calling or sending them a text message. If you don’t own a car, car-sharing is often one of the cheapest ways of reaching your destination. On the way, you can chat and get to know nice people. However, be sure to show up at the arranged pick-up point on time, or cancel well in advance if something prevents you from going.
